"xxxxx be like...."

Example "That dog be like don't touch my food."

White people aren't really *supposed* to use "be" in this manner. Eminem took heaps of shit for this at one point in his career.

Does

"The dog is like..."

Or

"The dog was all like..."

Irritate you too? Not a leading question. Just curious. All three are grammatically incorrect - and very *Californian* slang - the latter two being "white versions" of the same sentiment.

"So, then, I like, came in, and everyone was all like, "dude! you are like, totally bogus!" and so I was like, "what is this, like, some sort of inquisition or something, dude? Duh! It was like, stupid. And then their dog was like, "grrrr" and so, it was like a bad trip, so dude I like, split."

Although, you can "be all like," as a Californian white person. The rules are complex.

"be like" is different though.

"She be all like, duh, that shit obvious..." *shakes head*

Is different than, "So you can't be all like, "duh, that shit is obvious, what are you, like STUPID?" *cocks head to side and drops jaw like, OMG!*

My daughter often says "It be like that sometimes!" (She knows it's lo-class and says it kind of tongue-in-cheek.)

I usually reply with "It be like that *all* the time!"

See... unacceptable in mixed company.

Ethnic - you're not allowed, unless in the company of a member or members of the appropriate ethnicity who allow it, and only with that select group. Should an unknown member of that ethnic group be in earshot or join the group, the privilege is revoked temporarily.

SST: "Dad jokes"

I don't mean stop telling the jokes. It dawned on me today that people are using that phrase in reference to me A LOT lately, including people not in my family. Someone in a meeting at work said yesterday "we aren't done until IG adds a dad joke".

I've had this same style of humor since I was a small child. It didn't change when my kids were born, it didn't change when they got older, it didn't change recently. But suddenly I am the one who tells "dad jokes".

yeah, you were born a dad.  Some people are born with it, for others Maybelline.

I wish people would stop using the word "Karen" to describe a person who disagrees with another person.  Karen had a meaning at one time, now the slightest word is a Karen.... for example, this comment.

It is more an observation about your aging ass than about the jokes you tell. :)

Young men who make jokes like these are just "nerds" who tell "groaners".

Older men become "Dad joke" tellers - but it is a great illustration of how society collectively is able to lie to itself to believe stereotypes.

Stereotypes aren't manufactured out of thin air. Stereotypes come into existence from seeing the same pattern repeated many times. It's not considered polite to observe this, but it's true.

Why of course it is.

I'm a white straight conservative man. So I'm whatever pejorative you want to ascribe to me. Guilty of all sins, blameless for none.

It is. But I'm pretty sure he's making it as a tongue-in-cheek comment.

Stereotypes exist. That doesn't mean everyone is a stereotype, but they exist for a reason.

The same way Southerners use "Bless your heart" to mean "Go fuck yourself", I use "k" to mean "What you just said is so incredibly stupid I want to kill myself."
