Subject: Scotmen and Milton

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Can anyone help with some deep Trek lore?

I was rewatching the TOS episode "Space Seed" last night and was reminded of a line that has always puzzled me: Why does Scotty apologize for being a Scotsman not up on Milton? I don't know of any special connection between Milton and Scotland. Was it just a common stereotype held by Hollywood writers in the 1960s? "He's from Scotland, so he must play the bagpipes, be an alcoholic scotch drinker, be an engineer, and have Paradise Lost memorized."

My guess is stereotype at the time

I wonder where it came from. I've had that stereotype for years because of that scene.

I suppose it bears bringing up that in most star trek, they're all over the universe but the aliens they encounter are miraculously humanoid.

The crystal entity might disagree with you.  So would the Horta, and the Tribbles :)   ( and a few other rare cases )  i guess in theory even Q was abstract, just manifested himself to resemble the crew.

But ya, if it was like that in every episode it would be too abstract for most people and failed as a show.  Same reason the universal translator was invented, if you could not understand the other side in every episode, people would lose interest.

Word on the street is that the latest Disney Wars movie is so monumentally bad that it ruins the original trilogy. Apparently they "clarified" a bunch of things that ruin the mystique of the Force and reset the galaxy into something that sucks way more than we originally knew it.

Not that I was planning to watch any of that crap anyway, but geeze ... Kathleen Kennedy needs to be fed to a sarlacc.

There are only six star wars movies and only a trilogy that is genuinely good. Everything else is counterfeit.

You spelled "three" wrong.

"Star Wars: The Acolyte Introduces Lesbian Witches Who Procreate Without Men"

Now, i have no issues with lesbians.  Nor witches.  But those are adult subjects, and isn't current star wars really meant for children?

If I told you what used to pass as a children tale in the middle ages around here you would piss your pants.

Star Wars is dead anyway. Actually I had this conversation with friends yesterday at the board game orgy.

Nah, in the dark ages things were different. then they lightened up.   But i do think even back then it was 'different'.

Starwars died with Rey i think. ( tho it was ill before that )

Star Wars ended after Return of the Jedi was completed. ANH/ESB/ROTJ are canon, all else is crap.

If you're feeling particularly hokey then *maybe* the Christmas special could be considered legit. At least it's better than the Disney stuff.

I loved the old BSD games. In fact I set a public retroserver for them but I was the only guy using it :(

My first experience with that game was called "Apple Trek" where you ran the starship Endeavor and fought Klarnons. They didn't want to deal with copyright issues. Imagine that. Apple. :)
