Yes, it works. Yes, you should do it. Seriously, who even has *one* floppy drive anymore? Everyone sets the optical drive to Z: so they can make room for network drives on D: or E: ... why not put it on B: where there will *never* be a conflict?
Amiga OS did multi-root filesystems the right way. CP/M derivatives and their drive letters ... feh.

Well, it's good to know you can rely upon Microsoft for some things.

It's definitely in the repository. And to be certain, bash-on-ubuntu-on-windows pulls from the official Ubuntu repos, not from something Microsoftian, because it runs *unmodified* Linux binaries.
Maybe do "sudo apt update" first, to refresh your cache of available updates?

I should really have known better. But then, my expectations out of Microsoft are so low...
Considering how much Windows is NOT Linux, it's remarkable how authentic and compatible the Linux-on-Windows experience is. It's basically like WINE in reverse (which, if you think about it, is a zillion times easier, since the Linux ABI is a lot cleaner than Windows, and they don't have to cleanroom reimplement all of the system libraries, since it's all open source). On my computer I've also installed xming and can run GUI programs, albeit without any graphics acceleration. But who plays high framerate video games on Linux anyway?
I'm thinking that if the Linux world manages to complete the transition from X11 to Wayland, it'll be pretty easy for someone to build a Wayland compositor that coexists with the native Windows desktop.
Meanwhile, the desktop itself becomes less and less relevant every year. We could be looking at the end-state here.
When one appears on the Blue Screen of Death, it doesn't look friendly either, it looks smug. I'm sure they put it in other places too, because they think they're hip and trendy.

It's funny how people say that they can't use LibreOffice because it doesn't faithfully open MS Office documents 100% correctly 100% of the time ... when Micro$oft seems to be doing just fine with Office 365 on the web, which has the same problem. I daresay it might even be worse.
I don't know why anyone publishes these stupid stories. Gates has never been a visionary; he's been wrong most of the time; he's basically a one trick pony (enter a market with shoddy imitation products and dominate using hostile business practices).

Micro$oft is "retiring" the Windoze Fone apps for Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer. According to this bulletin, they "will continue to invest in the Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer mobile apps for iOS and Android, and also in desktop apps for Windows and Mac."
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Remember the old days, when M$ could topple entire industry segments just by pre-announcing a vaporware product? This is why the Windoze desktop doesn't bother me anymore: they have become incapable of monopoly anywhere else.
Don't get me wrong; I'd still like Bill Gates to be fed feet-first into a wood chipper. But the borg of redmond is no longer an existential threat to everyone else.

Now no one needs the evil Notepad++ anymore. (although gvim is superior anyway)
I also remember Notepad once had a limitation of 32 KB for the size of the files it could edit. I think it had to do with the fact that 32 KB was the maximum capacity of a text box in MFC. I don't remember when the limitation was lifted ... probably when Windoze went to 32-bit.
My guess is that Microsoft didn't envision Notepad as a text editor; they wanted it to be just ... a note pad, probably like what they do with OneNote today. It seems silly that they didn't fit it out with more features once they realized everyone was using it as a general purpose text editor. Then again, if they had done that, it would probably be bloated by now.
