I actually did want an answer to the question about what the "discs" actually are in DiscWorld. I'm not planning to read the books. What are they?
B) Regarding discs.. It's one disc.. consists of a large disc (complete with edge-of-the-world drop-off and consequent waterfall) resting on the backs of four huge elephants which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle, named Great A'Tuin (similar to Chukwa or Akupara from Hindu mythology) as it slowly swims through space.
C) You really should read. You'd apprecaite the silliness.
Aha! "Turtle swimming through space" makes a lot more sense than "What's the turtle standing on? / It's turtles all the way down"
"Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote."
Everyone knows that there were five elephants in the beginning!
@IG: What's stopping you from reading the books?
If you fear to waste time on fictional literature, start by reading The Science of Discworld. Every second chapter is non-fiction and very entertaining. Especially the chapter about the weird FPGA experiment is something that I really enjoyed and would probably never heard about without that book. Same goes for the Burgess shale, etc.
@IG: What's stopping you from reading the books?
Nothing specific to Discworld or even Pratchett in general. I'm just not much of a reader. If I had the patience to sit down with a book I'd probably read them all.
Away from the web, I read for a minuscule 1hr/2 weeks (equivalent to 4.5 minutes a day!.)
I absolutely despise this lack of effort, and intend to find a way to remedy it.
I try to read for at least a half hour every night before bed. It used to be I would read at lunch, after dinner, and before bed. Now I tend to go out out to lunch with co-workers, get busy with family stuff after dinner or gaming after dinner, but I have kept the read before bed. Most nights it ends up being around 45 minutes to an hour before going to sleep.
