Physical, Schmüsical... Layer 8 is the metaphysical one, based on the ID10T protocol. Everything above layer 1 might be considered as pure semantics, I guess. Wether you are using copper or homing pigeons is decided there, the rest should behave identical, only speed might be different. But I might be in error here.
