Today, there is a #GoogleWalkout happening. It seems that Andy was embroiled in some sort of sexual harassment thing, so the Goolag let him go ... which is fine, except they gave him a $90,000,000 golden parachute. Word got out, and now thousands of Goolagers are rioting.
Fun times! I think Andy should move back east and give me a few million dollars to make Citadel the next big thing.

Aaaaaaand now it seems that Google has decided it is God and can decide to make an entire species go extinct.
Apparently they are launching a new operation to exterminate mosquitoes.
I do mean "exterminate" in the non-Godwinian-Hitler sense, as in, wipe them out worldwide. They are releasing mosquitoes infected with a bacterium that, after they mate with wild mosquitoes, causes their baby mosquitoes to never hatch.
And yet, no one is asking the very obvious questions about whether it's acceptable to manipulate nature in this way, and what about unintended side effects, which are pretty much guaranteed? What happens when they inevitably breed super-mosquitoes that are resistant to this kind of bacteria, but carry malaria just as easily?
Oh, and this isn't being done for free either. They plan to sell this technology to governments and other large organizations in parts of the world where there are large mosquito problems. You know, the places where people are starving but they want to make sure everyone has access to social media.
I thought I saw a lot of questions about whether or not killing all mosquitos is a good idea. And I think, mostly, people think it won't cause any problems.
This said, I'm less certain of that. We've often thought, 'Sure, that shouldn't be an issue,' only to find when we do it that it is.
As an old-earth creationist, I can't help but be 100% confident that the mosquitoes are here for a very specific and deliberate reason, and for mankind to decide that we know better is a slap in the face to the Creator. It won't end well.

I am not a creationist, and I am almost 100% with you on the Mosquito thing, with the obvious exception, that I feel it's a slap in the of evolution.

Fri Feb 01 2019 11:59:00 AM EST from IGnatius T FoobarOh noes! I got an email today telling me that my Google+ page is being discontinued!
I don't think it's personal, mine is going too.
I'M m a little disappointed, I liked it, but its not The End Of The World. (I know this because the dolphins are still here)
At this point if it weren't for YouTube I wouldn't even maintain a Google account anymore.
https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2019/06/19/google-to-reimplement-curl-in-libcrurl/
libcurl is everywhere. libcurl is used by countless other applications (including Citadel) as the protocol handler library for standard Internet protocols.
It's clean and light and universal. Everyone uses it, everyone loves it.
Google has decided to build their own libcurl, using the same API but with Chrome's protocol handlers (cronet) behind it. So now you'll have a chance to add Google's spyware to your own applications, I guess. Maybe they'll even find ways to insert inline ads into everything.
If google were not scumbags, they'd do it the other way around. They should be contributing to libcurl development, and then throw away cronet, using libcurl instead as Chrome's backend.
While I was traveling I was using Google Maps, it has incorporated Waze notification features for speed traps, accidents and slow downs. Apparently it is very good at letting you know "Speed trap ahead" while you are passing the speed trap. Several times I would be passing the cop car off to the side of the road and Maps would tell me the speed trap was ahead.
