omfg. First they came for Columbus Day, now it's Thanksgiving. I
don't really care what happened in Plymouth. The holiday we
*celebrate* is one of thankfulness and community. Anyone who opposes
it, opposes that.
Lol, well, what did you expect.
Columbus Day seems to be taking quite a beating lately in many countries. It used to be celebrated as "Day of the Race" in many countries in South America and in Spain, but it looks like many nations think it is an evil name so they have been switching to other names for years.
It's also Canadian Thanksgiving, which was a convenient excuse for a three
day weekend when we had a lot of friends from out of town that we wanted to
have Thanksgiving dinner with, but were already heavily committed to family
events during the weekend of our American Thanksgiving.
That was decades ago, though. Nowadays, the family commitments are smaller and "friendsgiving" seems to be a thing (even though we don't call it that) so the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend is more than enough to get it done.
But ... as an Italian-American, I am deeply rooted in my hyphen and consider it a deep agression against my people to say bad things about Christopher Columbus.

I don't know, I don't think it is Columbus himself who is taking the beating, but the idea of European conquerors. Hernan Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, that sort of people.
Many South Americans have colony complex and think they are still at war against Europe. Which is funny, because South Americans blaming Europe for the conquests are actually the descendants of the European conquerors... the Europeans that are in Europe nowadays are the descendants of the Europeans that didn't travel to the Americas.

Not for long!
And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

GOOD FUCKING morning people!
Yeah.
I got so drunk last night (election night--of course) I broke my 5th metatarsal. I can limp around, but am scheduled for surgery next Thursday to get it pinned back together cleanly.
