Subject: Re: error starting citadel

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I am suddenly having this same issue after a reboot. I can't find where this port is defined and I also can't run the citadel config because...well...the citadel server won't start.

There's also a message that citadel should not be configured to run as root, but it is not. It has been running as a mortal user, but maybe that is just a product of running it as root for debug. I suspect my entire config has blown up because it just seg faults on start up (log at the end)

Any ideas how to t-shoot this without a reinstall?

Thanks,

Some more info...

This seems to be some bug in the Ubuntu package. If I install the citadel-suite package, it immediately goes into the ` configuration setting c_port_number is not -1 (disabled) or a valid TCP-Port - check your config! Default setting is: 504` as soon as it starts up.

I've removed it and am trying the easy install now.

Just saw this in CitaNews. Explains libcal...

* libical is no longer included with Easy Install. Building the new version just-in-time from source would require CMake, which we don't want to require.
(Everything we've done over the last two years has been intended to simplify, not complicate, the build.)

Yup. Still catching up in terms of figuring out the best way to get everyone squared away with their dependencies.

Happily, we now live in a world where the availability of the required libraries is MUCH more stable. In the past we had to go on a big complicated hunt for the correct versions of Berkeley DB and OpenSSL and libical and a bunch of other things, sometimes disabling certain features of Citadel if we couldn't find them. Today, we can 99% of the time count on the OS being Linux, the Linux following either the RedHat or Debian packaging of our supporting libraries, and the libraries being new enough to support Citadel. The remaining 1% are going to be people who are used to a lot of manual tweaking anyway -- we support them by providing source code and communicating the dependencies to them.
For everyone else, we want to tell them what the prereqs are and help them get installed.

I think a lot of developers (me included) weren't paying attention when things got easier over time. This is why we're now able to rely more heavily on packages provided by the OS distributor. It's also why we're moving away from GNU Autotools.

Subject: IMAP "flag" support?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

What would be involved in enabling the 'flag' option in IMAP? All of the email clients I use have the ability to toggle an email as 'flagged' and AFAIK, that seems to be a supported IMAP state. The flagged stats transfers between all clients in my experience. However, I see that I can't flag messages using Citadel. Is there some IMAP option I need to enable, or recompile with some option to enable this?

Or maybe I completely misunderstand how that function works...?

Thanks!

Subject: New to Citadel

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Well, I believe I ran a Citadel BBS MANY years ago.  My BBS history involved WWIV, Renegade, and Telegard, "back in the day"... participating in several WWIV nets and FIDOnet.

I recently sold off a large web forum community (running on SMF).  As I transition to a smaller, hosted server, I thought about migrating my meager email needs to Citadel.  I'd love to participate in some networked subforums...and also would love some direction as to how to set up basic mailing lists (I assume they are room-based) and email forwards.

Subject: First install attempt failed

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

My first attempt of installing Citadel failed. I've run my own private web server for about a year, and now is the time to install a full email server.

This is also my first attempt to install an email system, so I'm not very familiar with the nomenclature.

I'm trying Citadel based on recommendations.

The last part of the output from the installation can be found as an attachment (Citadel.log).

You may want or need this information:

How do I want to use Citadel?

I have 4 computers; one ("Plato") is my "Office" computer. It will run Postfix. The other three are non-GUI servers running Ubuntu 18.04 with Apache, php7.2, MySQL etc.

"Pingu" is the primary web server.

"Padda" (means "the toad") is meant to run Citadel.

"Panda" will also run Citadel (as a backup).

All of these can be be used as a web server for backup reasons, but "Pingu" will only use local sendmail.

Padda and Panda shall be able to run a full email system, serving SMTP and POP3/IMAP. They are running the same software. WEB requests will normally be routed to Pingu, while SMTP requests will be routed to Panda or Padda. The router setup determines which one is active (Port forwarding or Virtual Server settings). I'm using an external DDNS which is kept up-to-date.

These two can also run as a backup web server in case Pingu goes down. Several backup copies a day ensure that they are in good sync.

Based on my log, can anyone tell me what I need to do next?

Thanks!
