As in "think different"? What would Apple Porn look like, anyway?

I get these, regularly. I really get a chuckle when they come from/to an email alias that I've created for some specific site/company or forum site.

Friends of mine ask my why I continue to run my own mail server instead of just surrendering to gmail or somesuch.

This...all day long, this.

FTN. I wouldn't trust any mail server other than my own. As for aliases, I still like to generate disposable ones using spamgourmet.com , but once in a while I'll do aliases if I expect to need an address for more than just a sign-up or something.

I do that with postal mail too. Sometimes I'll make up a middle name or add a fictional company name, so if I see that name again I'll know who sold my contact info to a mailing list.

I do the same thing, I have an email address for each place I log in to and use the odd middle name when I fill out something on-line.

My pets have an email address of their own and will use their name for pet supplies and products.

Latest peeve: sites that not only begin autoplaying a video (with or without sound) when you load a page, but then "helpfully" move the video into an overlay on the lower-right corner of the screen when you scroll past its original location.

Someone needs to be beaten hard for this.

If it's a site I spend any real amount of time on, I'll usually try to disable that function with my ad blocker.

I mentioned this earlier, it is terrible.  It is bad enough the video auto-plays, but when it scrolls with the page it is worse.  Yes you can mute it but I don't want to see it at all.

Agreed. The people who do things like this deserve a special place in the data-center in hell.

Well, it's true, but it's also obvious, so...

What would happen if some of these Silicon Valley Hitlers just came out and said "we're [platform], we're [this political leaning], and we're ok with that".

For example, MSNBC is outwardly left-wing, while CNN claims to be neutral.
What would happen if Facebook and Twitter and Google took the MSNBC route instead of the CNN route? It's not like they're fooling anyone.

This would immediately eliminate the whole thing about shadowbanning and biased algorithms and everything else because they could just be like "yeah, that's our editorial position, deal with it"

I'd probably respect them a little more for at least being HONEST liberals.

For my entire life, the Left has been saying, "Those ZANY right wing conspiracy theorists! They're always claiming we're these things, and of COURSE we're not..."

Then every time you look, the Left has become everything the Right Wing Tin Foil Hatters have said the Left was.

They're good at it. That is what makes them scary. The far right is scary too, but they're so clumsy, they couldn't sneak up on a deaf, dumb blind kid.

The Left though... they're sneaky bastards.

The extremes on either end of the spectrum are horrible.

It's all a balancing act. If I felt either side actually cared about people over their political machines, I might have respect for them.

But I don't think that's the case. For either side.

It doesn't help that most people see anyone even slightly to the [left|right] of themselves as a "far-[right|left] extremist". I blame this squarely on the media, who have turned outrage into a profit center.

Yes, I include myself in this, although it's usually tongue-in-cheek when I refer to anyone even slightly left of myself as a socialist communist America-hating demoKKKrat. If I was serious about that, it would exclude half of my friends, and I don't want that to happen. (My lefty relatives, on the other hand...)

A lot of people have been seriously infected by the hysteria, though. I had an old friend who was radicalized by Facebook and then systematically eliminated from his life anyone who didn't share his far-from-center political views. That was sad.

Then there's our old friend Xydexx, whose mantra is now "Be good, have fun, launch nazis into the sun" ... where "nazi" is defined as anyone not on the far-left. It's very sad, because he really believes it, and spends his days looking for nazis around every corner.

We're being divided into tribes, and it's not cool. The old media started it; Facebook and Twitter are enforcing it.

You nailed it. We're in the midst of a mass hysteria - like the Red Scare/McCarthyism, or even the Salem Witch Trials. I feel like we can't see it because we're in the middle of it. People are witch hunting for Nazis.

And it is all about tribalism. But I don't know that this aspect is necessarily the media's fault. It is a human frailty - the media just capitalizes on it. The rise of Identity Politics, which really accelerated in the last two years of Obama's second term - has been terrible for the unity and identity of this country.

It is nothing new, but it has been getting worse.

Well, there are actors attempting to wedge a large divide using social media as their tool. As in, foreign governments attempting to destabilize the US.

And the social media companies are trying to combat it... but in doing so, they reveal something rather scary about social control.

It's nice that we can chat with each other over these nifty forms of communication, but it feels like the average person needs some training on the matter to avoid succumbing to mental manipulations.

Libertarians tend to assume the best of human nature and capability - and I find it one of the frailties of Libertarian ideology.

I'm all for a representative Republic decided by a very narrow Democracy because I'm a pessimist about human nature.

I think most "average" people couldn't critically think their way out of a wet paper bag, let alone apply training on avoiding succumbing to mental manipulations by the press, politicians, foreign agents, or corporate cabals.

We're a world of blue pills.
