Hosts needs regular expressions or something.

Well, this isn't really what the hosts file was intended to do, so it's kind of a workaround. Obviously if you control your own network edge you can block entire domains on your DNS server, and of course the browser ad blockers *do* have regular expressions.

Mechanics aside, the key takeaway here is that I've found that the most obnoxious ads, at least on the sites I've been on over the last week or so, have come from Fecesbook. Blocking Fecesbook at the network level while turning off ad blocker on sites which insist on it, seems to allow those sites to load while still blocking the ads that rape your eyes and your computer's CPU.

Well written, and lots of people need to read it ... as for folks like us, we can only say "it's about time you people figured this out."

Amazon is clearly becoming the kind of company that antitrust law was written to stop -- gaining control of so much infrastructure that it sucks the value out of everything it touches.

Here's a good analogy, and I think it's one that I'm going to stick with for a while.

QQuitting Facebook is like quitting smoking.

Everyone knows it's toxic, everyone knows it's bad for you, and everyone knows it's addicting and hard to quit. (It took me three or four tries to quit, but I managed to pull it off eventually.) But if you're committed, your true friends will help you beat the addiction.

People who have successfully quit Facebook all seem to feel this way. And they all agree that they're much better without it.

(Discussion is welcome, but if anyone suggests that Facebook is *not* toxic, you're automatically advertising denial of your problem.)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hmm... toxic, yes, when approached a certain way.

I don't use it that way.

I use it to create exceptionally hostile arguments that inflame other people's passions, then find a tub of virtual popcorn.

Used in this way, it's quite entertaining.

Are we all in agreement that at this point, any email with your name in the subject line is automatically spam?

Aside from the fact that this lowlife has my real name (I'm assuming Scumazon sold it to them) ... this one is so amazingly ironic that I just had to share it.  (Slightly redacted.)

They want to sell me ghostwriting and publishing services, but the writing of the email is, ironically, REALLY bad.  How many spelling and grammar mistakes can you find?

In the very least they spelled your last name correctly. If these writers have Thomas Edison and Bill Gates as clients, the company have credibility.

They did spell my last name correctly. I redacted it from my post.

And if they are using Bills (sic) Gates, Thomas Edison, Stephen King, and JK Rowling as good examples, that further destroys their credibility in my eyes. All four of them are absolutely horrible people. Mark Twain was pretty cool though.

I can't decide whether the author of that message is a native English speaker.
There are some pretty egregious errors in it.

I'm a tad amused by that as well.

I took one look at that app, and where it came from, and said to myself, "Nope, not gonna do it." So I didn't install it.

Doesn't matter that if I wanted to try to do something interesting using the web interface, they would implore me to install their grubby little app, but I steadfastly refused. Because they're slime.

What app?  The fecesbook app?  Yeah, that's the one that turns on your microphone and listens in on conversations in the room so it can target advertising at you.\

Meanwhile, I discovered that Slashdot is still around!

Facebook was built on dishonesty. (Score 5, Insightful) 165

Why would Zuckerberg comply with anything other than armed officers escorting him out of the building? The entire service was built on dishonesty. Stolen from another student, built to keep tabs on coeds they wanted to bang, and slurping and exploiting data on the other two billion people who have signed up since then. Facebook is toxic. Facebook is a cancer on the Internet. Facebook brings out the worst in people. Facebook breaks every privacy law a million times every day. The Internet needs to rid itself of Facebook.
