In the days after the deletion, I had considered that as a nice affirmation of my decision.  Nobody has asked, so I assume Facebook (like BSD) is dead, or dying already.

Delete was the option IG.  They give you a 14 day period to recover (by logging in again).  I have not given in.  The old posts will remain a part of that mass collection.

As much as I share your intense dislike for Facebook, IG, it *is*
immense amounts of fun to log in to that thing, and annoy the living
shit out of the liberals! <evil grin>

Yeah, I had fun with that until some piece of garbage terrorist from Pakistan followed me from my Facebook to my Twitter, then from my Twitter to my LinkedIn, and from my LinkedIn to my employer, and sent the "please fire [IGnatius T Foobar]" message.

Back then it just resulted in "hey dude, check this out, the company is exposed so be careful." With our current management (complete with Catbert) I would catch hell for it. One more reason to delete Faecesbook.

Ah, the advantages of being retired, living on a relatively remote mountaintop, and having neighbors that are completely convinced that I'm "connected."

Of course, having my visiting friends call me 'Don Vincenzo' whenver we are out and about around here is probably not hurting that image, either... <evil grin>

Agreed IG. My spidey (sysadmin) senses tingled when I read some of your posts. I am disgusted by the underpinnings of some of the web offerings. I should probably not be given my experiences. So many of the deals seem to trade seemingly uninterestingly bits of yourself for access to a wider conscience, that made it feel comfortable and ultimately like you were in control. Slick how they did that.  If I were a truly evil person (or a used car salesman), I would probably go in to that business.

"Step One: Delete Facebook!"
(Glove and Boots job interview tips)

It's easy for BBS operators to despise Facebook. We were the pioneers of online communities, and Facebook destroyed in just a couple of years what we spent decades building. Worse, the world *they* built is the complete antithesis of what the rest of us worked so hard for.

Zuckerberg just bought 700 acres in Hawaii. I hope he falls into a volcano.

On the other hand, we can use Facebook as a honeypot for crappy BBS users.

IG, I must disagree.

The INTERNET destroyed BBS communities.

DialUp BBSing established the concept of communities in a very real sense.

We had meetings.
We had coffee get-togethers.
We had pizza-nite affairs.
We had the OwlBash.
And we even had regional Sysop meetings and loose organizations.

And in 1993, at the annual OwlBash, I was immediately hated by every Sysop in attendance when I told them "it was a great ride, but it's over. By this time next year, you will either become ISPs, or you will be gone. Period."

I really wished, even then, that I was wrong. But I knew that I was not.
And, as it turned out, the result was more complete than I thought.

*That* was community. "Real Life" social interchange that, were it not for dial-up bulletin boards, would not have happened. People who met, face to face, after meeting on the boards, and established friendships - many of which endure to this day.

The communities we built are gone.
They'll never be back.

Many people log in here, but how many have actually seen each other more than, maybe, once or twice?

Between Jersey Devil Citadel, Morningstar Keep, and Willie's Place we had about 100 to 200 folks that met, off and on, several times yearly and for about 8 or 9 years before the internet destroyed it.

Folks that you could call for help - whether it be for computers, or hauling firewood because one had a truck and the other didn't - etc etc etc.

That's what we had then.
And that's what is missing today.

We had that here, and kept it going long past the transition from dialup to the Internet.  Not everyone made it through that transition but we did.  Then in 2009-2010 a boatload of people got on Facebook and immediately made it their only online destination.

Facebook is the Wal-Mart of Internet destinations.  It's huge and huge numbers of people use it but it has no soul, and it damages everything and everyone around it for its own benefit.

To make matters worse, Facebook is carefully designed to create drama and make people hate each other, because it's clickbait that keeps them coming back and viewing more ads.  Facebook brings out the worst in everyone.

These are the reasons why Facebook is the sworn enemy of the rest of the Internet.  And they are the reasons why I hope Mark Zuckerburg dies of Ebola.

IG - I am a bit puzzled by only one part of your last message. You mention ads on FaceCrook. I have yet to see *any* ads on there. Perhaps AdBlock Addon for FireFux is better than I thought.

yes, at least new people rather seldom appear in IRC. and my ICQ bitlebee only seems to receive weirdly encrypted spam which I can't read...

I am willing to give it a go, as I am enjoying it so far.  Hope I don't inflict too much collateral damage on my journey.
