The entire reason we have censorship. If the serfs dont know what freedom and daily food is, they wont demand it.  And the few that realize what it is, has a steeper hill to climb to get support of the serfs to overthrow....

RealClearPolitics.com's new "Real Clear Polling" site sucks and I wish they would bring back the old (but superior) interface. I sent them an email stating my disapproval, as if they will listen.

I think in general web people exist to destroy good sites.  Just to say " we are working and doing something "

And "they got used to this, let change it and move stuff around.. * evil laugh * "

Finally, a large language model ("AI") that is useful.

From the folks who brought you the chaotic social network of the same name, Gab AI will write about whatever you ask. It's the first publicly available "AI" that passed my litmus test: I asked it to write arguments both for and against climate alarmism, and it happily did both without editorializing at me.

For me, this is a big win. My experience with the other sites tends to quickly become like Dave Bowman talking to HAL -- "this conversation serves no further purpose". Gab AI meanwhile is getting it done.

Highly recommended, even if you don't care for their social media site.

I still say you should try local models.   You will be surprised.

Yes, it will be slower than someone who can pay for a wall of A100s. but it will work. And its not hard.

Share and enjoy. It's nice to have something I can use at work after they banned all of my preferred search engines.

gas company 'we have updated and upgraded our systems bla bla bla bla" "you now have a new account number and have to update any payment processing" "bla bla bla"  had to reset password, update to new links bla bla. Now its dreadfully slow and more confusing to use.

"Upgrade" Ya. sure.

Yeah, it is an awesome service, and since it is semi-public instead of plain-public, it does not get ratelimited by upstream engines.

Enjoy! I plan to keep it running for the foreseeable future. When I have some spare cycles I might add some branding and customization but it will still be "semi-public". And by that I assume you mean "not listed in searx.space".
We'll keep it that way, if the side effect of that is being rate limited by the upstream search engines.

Ratelimiting and such come from the fact you generate too much traffic for upstream engines. If it is only three horse-smelling dudes using the instance that won't happen.

The guy running 4get has a proxy fleet. His instance selects a proxy in a round-robin way to send queries upstream in order to dilute the traffic. The setup costs him 50 bucks per month.

I don't suppose anyone has a gopher server or gemini server I could leech off of for a bit? To play around mostly. Thinking of setting one up myself, but not sure what I actually want to accomplish in the end.

I am not very familiar with Gemeni beyond knowing it exists. I operate a number of Gopher servers.

Setting one is very easy these days. I think SDF sets one for you with their accounts.

This may have always been the case but never noticed until today.

I have a server here at home that has more than one web service running.  I hit it via IP ( i guess i COULD use DNS.. but ...). Each service is a different port.  ( ya ya , so far. normal stuff, i know ) In chrome i zoomed out on one of the apps to take a screenshot. It also changed the zoom rate of any other tab on the same IP, even if it was a different port. I thought it was smarter than that.

Wait, I thought Gemini was google's AI, not something you can self host?

Am I wrong?

The one hes thinking of:

Gemini is an application-layer internet communication protocol for accessing remote documents, similar to HTTP and Gopher. It comes with a special document format, commonly referred to as "gemtext", which allows linking to other documents. Started by a pseudonymous person known as Solderpunk, the protocol is being finalized collaboratively and as of October 2022, has not been submitted to the IETF organization for standardization.

The one you are thinking of:

Google did release some interim models some time ago that you CAN run locally, but i doubt that is the same model ( even if larger ) they are running for Gemini    ( Gemma is the name of models they released )
