Ok so  have to amend this one.. slightly.

For Xmas I bought wife a dedicated android emulation console and a hand held thingie ( sort of like a PSP, but uses emulators for several game consoles )

The last console i bought was a Jaguar. ( should not surprise anyone, being the Atari fan i am. even tho it wasn't a general purpose computer it was way ahead of things. )

I think i paid about 200, in early 1990 dollars.

My kids are playing the latest Super Mario game. The same one they've been making over and over again for the last 40 years, just with new graphics and new features, but it's basically the same platform sidescroller, and it still manages to hold the attention of gamers for all these decades. Incredible.

When you have a system that works, why change it?  Minimal story, maximum gameplay.

why not just buy her an actual PSP?

Because a PSP plays PSP games. This emulates 30+ machines.

Retro gaming is pretty cool. I don't have the time or patience to do the FPGA thing, but my kids (18 and 23) still love to play games that were written decades ago in emulation mode on the new consoles. Classic games one day, their modern counterparts the next day, they love them all.

Unless you are into 'faithful reproduction' not sure FPGA is worth the effort to be honest.  Emulation gives you the same 'end effect'. and lots more support, both hardware options and software.

I almost went that route with the wife, but figured why bother with the extra overhead, and form factor ( the psp form factor, makes it easier to use too  just one box to deal with, and she can select the emulator in a pretty android menu.. )

Next time ParanoidDelusions comes around these parts he'll tell you that FPGA is the absolute best if you want the most faithful reproduction of the original experience.  And that makes sense if you think about it.  Even low end hardware is so much faster than the old stuff that we really can do perfect emulation, but you get huge pixels that are perfectly square.  The same could be said for sound; it's technically the correct sound but it's a little too good, kind of the same as when people deliberately put tubes in their amplifiers to warm up their digital sounds.

But it's work.  You can't just load it up and go.

There are some 'kits' to make it not hard to.

But i do tend to agree, unless you are a purist, emulation is fine, and easier.   And if you are REAL purist, even FPGA wont work as its not truly the same as true discrete logic and stuff....

OSGrid ( the home/testing grid for the OoenSimulator dev team ) is celebrating its 17th birthday later this summer.  Hard to believe its been 17 years.

So, i feel even older. Between this and my 8031 thread in ancient computing..

If you didn't already know, Romero has been releasing new episodes just for the fun of it called Sigil. There are two so far and they're pretty good. Only gripe I have is that they break some of the hard-coded limits of the classic DOS engine, so you to play them with one of the fancy modern ports.

I also heard this friday they were doing an update on the original DOOM, adding yet an extra episode.

I think none of this is compatible with vanilla, but with some fancy ports.

I think FreeDOOM is not an engine, but a bunch of assets to use with an engine.

"Fancy ports" would be stuff like zdoom.

Hmm all i know is if i install it on Debian, its a functioning game.   Perhaps the package brings along an engine too.  i always assumed it was all part of the 'kit'.

Somebody brought it to my attention that in Baldur's Gate 3 you have the option of romanzing a druid. As a side effect, you may end up getting laid with a shapeshitfing druid, aka you may get to fuck a druid in bear form.

It looks like furries are breaking into the mainstream so hard.

Also, wokest game of the year crashed and burned between 100 million and 200 million USD in the process, and I predict the studio will die soon enough. Employees were forced to take a month vacation already after the flop. I can't say I am crying.

Meanwhile, China has broken in quite heavily in the market with their first AAA game, among controversies because their marketing directives prohibited it be promoted in places which fostered things such as feminist propaganda and the like. THe woke crowd hated its guts. The game has like 2 million concurrent players on launch.

I think it is a bit concerning that China is capable of breaking into the AAA market while the Western Block is dumbing down. The West used to think it was ok for China to do agriculture, because the West was strong in industry; then China became an industrial power. Now the West thinks it is ok to let China be an industrial power, because the West is a services and technology power; now china is on its way to become a technological power.

I am not a dev, but I know enough devs to figure out if China takes it seriously enough to develop an IT industry, the West is screwed because Western software is in a state of disarray. The fact China can produce a killing AAA game shows they have development power already. I think westerns should be concerned.
