It had NOTHING to do with incentivising recycling and everything to do with revenue generation. Guess who keeps the money when bottles and cans aren't recycled? The State.

They count on people being lazy. According to New York State's Bottle Bill website, the redemption rate is around 65%. The State keeps 80% of the funds and 20% go to the distributors/bottlers.

While I haven't see the hard numbers, apparenlty New York makes upwards of $100 million a year on the program. Massachusetts generates $39 million a year.

Someone mentioned it was the state but I didn't know how that worked.

Stop the deposit then. Stop requiring people to put recyclables into special containers marked for that purpose. Stop all of it.

Then wait several years, and let's measure how much we actually recycle.

I'm willing to buy a large pizza of your choice that the recycling rate will drop far below 65%.

WWII saw a lot of recycling, yes, under a heavy propaganda campaign ("do your part", yadda yadda). What happened after WWII though? Our landfills E X P L O D E D with trash.

So don't give me that crap that incentives don't work.

As far as costs of recycling, depends 100% on the material. It's cheaper to recycle aluminum than it is to refine it, by quite a good amount. It's why we don't have "tin" cans anymore; they're all aluminum now. It's no coincidence that recycling programs focus on aluminum products for the most part.

Recycling takes energy. That's the major cost driver. Drop the energy costs required, and you'll see more recycling of different products. Even plastics, today, are starting to be recycled into different things, ranging from carpets to 3D printer filament.

Which raises an interesting issue; we have all the energy we need to recycle with in the world. We have *vast* deserts with which we can collect solar energy from (either solar-voltaic or solar-thermally). Capital costs would be high, but operating costs would be low, and the products resold through it can turn a profit. The only thing really stopping this from happening are: 1) public perception, 2) fear, and 3) lack of political will (keeping deserts pristine and other environmental issues).

There are states that don't require deposits and people still recycle.

How about stopping the need for people to recycle stuff? Hire people to pick through our trash and decide what to recycle? I hate putting out two garbage cans, or being forced to keep garbage around to recycle.

It's a perfect job for criminals.

This is what I meant when I said that the deposit system is obsolete. Most of this stuff can be handled by computer vision systems these days; you don't even need criminals anymore, really.

Not sure if this is the right place, but it IS a rant, so...

Today I discovered that MS PowerPoint for MacOS colors its window this putrid orange, and because every other window in the system still adheres to a more or less skeumorphic design, I kept closing a bunch of other windows thinking I was closing PowerPoint. It took me some time to realize what was going on.

This is not Facebook's fault. This is Microsoft's fault for being retarded and not wanting to remain consistent with MacOS's design guidelines. Apple's not entirely without blame too, but Microsoft owns this one, full stop.

All windows on the screen following the system's native chrome is *so* 20th Century. But you have to accept software that doesn't use the native chrome, and you have to welcome it, even if it damages your system, because if you don't, you're a racist!!!1

This is a double rant.

Do people not understand personal space?  When I am at the gym and the entire row of treadmills is empty why does someone feel they have to get on the machine right next to me?  This drives me crazy.  I don't care if the gym is busy and someone gets next to me but when the row is empty and they have to walk down and get close to me I think WTF.  I could understand if they wanted to get in front of a particular TV, but they don't seem interested in that.
There are a few rants about people at the gym but that one has to do with my next rant.

Urgent care places are bad, the "Doctor of the Day" treatment isn't the best.  A friend went to one for stomach pain, they sent him home told him it was gas or something.  That night his appendix burst.  My doctor told me they had no openings and go to urgent care.  I went to urgent care, heart rate was over 120 beats a min, they didn't say anything to me and this was not flagged as dangerous.  The next day I was admitted to the hospital and spent about two weeks there followed by out-patient care.
So I don't like urgent care centers.  My mother had some problems and her doctor said they had no openings and go to urgent care.  Usually it is filled with nasty sick people that you really don't want to be around.  On this day it was quiet.  Here is a picture of the waiting room:

Some awful sick looking fuctard walks in and sits right next to me.  WHAT THE FUCK?  You are fucking sick, the room is fucking empty.  Have some fucking courtesy and sit away from everyone else if you are sick.

(If you look closely the TV is scrolling left wing news propaganda copied and pasted from some website.  I know it was copied and pasted because it would have image tags in the scroll.)

My sister died from appendicitis after NINE attempts at getting it properly diagnosed, both by urgent and scheduled care. Nobody successfully diagnosed it until after it had already burst. They rushed her into the ER, and one of the nurses dropped a scalpal. Instead of getting a new one from the tray, she decided the 5-second rule applied, and picked it up from the floor, wiped it on her gown, and handed it to the Dr.

Fun facts: if she had NOT wiped it on her gown, my sister would still be alive today. If she hadn't dropped it, obviously, she'd still be alive today.
If she just grabbed another instrument, she'd still be alive today.
