Not had problems like that, losing files. Thankfully.   I do weekly backups, so not end of world event but ya, would be damned annoying. 

Like i mentioned i also have heard that KDE is better than it was, but for me, no reason to go back. Unless im using KDE apps too, its still a waste of resources. And i have found noobies do ok with LXDE "and down here is the menu, with all your stuff... sort of like windows 95 was".

And as much as i hate Microsoft, a start menu of some sort wasn't a bad thing to have.

i have stuck with lxde since it came out. 

Used to use KDE in the early days.. until it became too inconsistent and bloated ( i hear its not as bad now.. but no need for me to go back, nothing i run is a kde app.. )

I don't like the direction Linux UI is taking either. As a console/standalone WM dude, when I try an actual desktop environment it tends to feel very Windowsy.

Was out near where i grew up. But yes you do have the store brands.. cheaper, but even they are more than they should be, since often times they are not as good as the other commodity brands, which i cant stand :)   And of course you have the 'craft' brands, which are stupid priced.. even more than they used to be. I should have been selling mine the last couple of years... doh!

I feel like this should be common sense among UI designers, but I guess it has to be said.

1) Things I want to click shouldn't move, and things I don't want to click shouldn't move into the path of things that I may want to click. In fact, just in general, nothing should move unless I do something to make it move.
2) If you just can't help yourself, then at least inhibit responding to clicks until a half-second or so after something moves. Bonus points for some kind of visual indicator when input is disabled and transitions to accepted (e.g., grayed out).

Normally you dont need an entire kit *just* to flash. In this case its not even an 'os image build kit' ( which they dont have, as far as i know, you are stuck with their images )  its an 'app dev kit' for stuff to run on the device, under (ick) ubuntu 

And using stuff like Armbian or Build root, its not all that bad.  Run a builder, select a few options you want, out pops an OS image you can put on removable storage and boot.  Then install it to eMMC or M.2  several you can also just plug in to yoru PC and it shows up as a 'storage drive' and flash it from there. 

They really didnt need to lock you in to their ecosystem so tightly. You gave them the $ for the board, set it free.

ugh. i have no experience with their embedded/ARM products but it sounds typical.

I do run their desktop GPUs, I'm not 100% sure what's going on but it seems like there have been some driver issues lately that are still unresolved.

in this case, they require you to install an entire dev tool kit just to flash a OS image ( or boot loader ) onto one of their dev boards. And as they are butt-heads, they only support host OS versions of like 2 versions ago..  and it will check and fail to work if you have anything current.

Actually, i think i complained about this not to long ago. Same thing, same reason, still pisses me off due to all the trouble.

That and i was trying to reload a model they discontinued, which i still dont understand why. They keep the low end board, ( even came out with an even lower-end one ) then came out with this, which was several times 'better' than the earlier low end models, then shortly after a even higher end board ( which is fine ) but then dropped the middle, and most cost effective, version... wtf..

I like having a whole OS/Software image.

I wish i had moved south where its cold, like i planned to back after i got out of highschool.  ( well, that was plan A.. Plan B didnt work out either )

Oh, left out my nextcloud, auto sync via rsync, but its mostly copies of 'home' on my desktop anyway.  And rsync grabs auto backups from my server farm of the servers that need it..  onto another external SSD, every week or 2..   

But really other than plugging a device in here and there, and hitting 'go', its painless. 

Desktop has 2tb.  "home" is backed up via rync to an external m.2 once a week, via simple shell script.     OS/Software, i dont bother.

2 tb SSD on TV for video and music..  ( copied from the next drive down, add new stuff every so often )

2 8tb external spinny drives. One is attached 'as needed' the other is rsyned from that once a month. and kept offline otherwise.  Simple shell script here too so almost no effort on my part.

use VVV to index on the 'as needed' drive on a regular basis. ( http://vvvapp.sourceforge.net/ )

I know everyone complains about it being too hot or cold ( well, you wont hear me ever say its too cold ), i'm deadly serious about it killing me.  I have a real hard time with heat, not just being a baby and not liking it :)

Used to work for a computer service company some 30 years ago. One side of the house did 'home service'. ( i was assigned corporate customers, thankfully. Only had to fill in a couple of times )  We were 3rd party, and vendor sent the wrong part on a guy over in Ohio. Home owners refused to let the guy leave until it was fixed.  He had to call 911 to be rescued. The 2 times i had to help out due to staffing, were much nicer ( including free dinner at one place ).

You never know what you will get going to a stranger's house..

My aunt and uncle would answer the door like that, when it was the religious adults going door to door. Scare them away for the season.

I'm not *against* having a dead tree book or 2, i just want them all ( and more ) on my reader.  Travels better than a shelf of books..  mostly water proof.    I pretty much gave up on paper, except for special cases, long ago.

The reader makes it more practical to have an entire library with you.

I have an ereader and a laptop both full of books, but I insist of having a paperback copy of First Aid for Horses in addition to the digital ones. Bonus points because if need arises it burns better in the fireplace than an ereader.

In my case, its mostly seasonal.  I do test, but not as diligent as i should be. Speaking of i need to finish that new battery pack and get those new solar panels up.

Unsure about Diesel as i have never looked. but 'gas' is still ok here. But, i dont see why Diesel wouldn't be ok here too, other than the demand here is for regular "gas" ones.

Because it runs on "gas". its brain dead easy to also run it on propane, natural gas, butane, hydrogen, etc.   I have all the pre-set regulators to do both natural and propane, and an adapter plate installed to feed it in after the carb, so as to do it 'right'.  Not that you "have" to, but its a cleaner and more solid setup that just drilling a hole in the side of the air filter and sticking in a hose.

I also periodically test the equipment, to be sure it works.

If i needed a manual to operate my generator, i would have downloaded it when i bought it, not waited until the power is out. I wouldn't want to be siting on the floor in the garage in the dark " i wonder, how does this work ?" even with a nice pretty vendor supplied book. Besides, it needs periodic care. And if i was that concerned about reading it on dead tree paper, id have printed it and attached the paper to the thing.  

Now back to what *i* do ...  "but your e-ink needs to charge"  ya, like every couple of months if i use it all the time, so not a huge risk in practical terms.  I also have a 'spare' reader with about 500 books on it, and solar charger panel for it.  I only bring it out to be sure its charged. Aside from novels to occupy my time for extended periods of no power, it has survival info, engineering books, farming, foraging, ( in color.. ) wood working, etc.  Its in a waterproof box, along with my portable ham radios ( also kept charged, about once a month ), about 100 bucks in cash, basic medical supplies. and an extra box of ammo. The oh-shit "emergency box" to grab on the way out the door.   Lets see you bug out with 500 paper books.... 

And im not dictating what YOU have to do, just that it works for me, and i dont want paper. it has zero value. Other than to help start a campfire.

So much agree with this.

Documnentation should be ellaborated alongside the tool and distribute with it. When you buy a chainsaw you expect it to come with a complete manual, not to point you to an online manual - except some consumer tools are starting to do just that.

Having an online reference may make sense for goods which can be reprogrammed (such as appliances you may flash with new firmware) but even those should get their fucking paper manual.

In most cases, i agree they are not.

I have seen a couple that were managed by a vendor with an iron fist, and only allowed submissions from their team, and were approved before publishing.  But that is rare.

But, and i just may be old school, i prefer a traditionally formatted PDF i can take with me and read off-line in my e-ink reader, with an index, table of contents, etc etc..  ( since i have moved on from dead tree books i'm ok with PDF or ePUB, but not the concept.. )

Brother was in town the other day for some appointment.  A small dog was in the parking lot across the street trying lick up scraps near the dumpster.  It had a muzzle on it. torn apart from the dog trying to find a way to eat, and nose torn up from it pawing at it for who knows how long..  Had not eaten for days, if not longer. Skinny as it could be.

He managed to catch it, take it to the vet to have it cut off, took it home. Its safe and will be cared or now.  But dog should never have been in that condition. Pisses me off.   The people who did that should be found, beat to a pulp and turned into animal feed, while still alive. And, all their assets seized and donated to local shelters.

No idea how angry this stuff makes me.

Same here. I don't have bullet points - but there were a ton of morons on the road today. Almost got hit in the parking lot - and predicted the guy was going to do it before he did, so I had already started evasive maneuvers when he attempted to. 


He pulled up next to me once we got out on the street, wouldn't look at me, his girlfriend looked over at me for just an instant and quickly rolled her eyes in a total, "OMG, I know... he is an idiot!" way. I *saw* her yelling at him as I swerved around him.

I would trust friend A's word that friend B was who they said they were. I would not trust GloboHomoXYZCorp.

That may work for some people, but we cant go out and do our own thing.  We must follow procedure in these matters. Be them right or wrong they are the rules to follow so everyone is doing the same thing. One advantage of it being managed by that team however, is if things to south, its their problem to fix, re-issue, revoke, whatever.   Don't want 100s of people with their fingers in that pie doing random things.

Now, most people do get to apply their own certs here.  I just happen not to have access to the servers now since they got moved to the vendors cloud. Up until a couple of years ago, it would have been me doing it. ( still with officially blessed/managed certs tho )

You might want to consider LetsEncrypt or other services from vendors like AWS that automate everything for you.

Honestly didnt expect her to see it until monday.

This evening: "so and so had it on his schedule for friday, can you check to see if it was done" ( ticket had not been touched, no comments, no ownership ). I did check this morning before the email,  but went ahead and checked again. low and behold it was done. Emailed back, thanking her for looking into it ( and letting her know that there was nothing added to the call.. ). Went back to do a screen dump of the cert info for my own records, and its back to the 18th.

My assumption is we have more than one web server ( i really dont know, its all hidden to us ) and he only did one.  AND he didnt take ownership of the call AND he didnt update the ticket. AND he didnt schedule with me for testing.

I think that is the best bit of advice for many in this situation. Its true, its often not worth the energy as the problem will solve its self.. And in this case, sounds like it will be sooner than later, as while i dont do the church thing, i would not think that what he is doing would work out well for a traditional church.

I'm gonna rant a bit, and it isn't even about my workplace, or the government, or technology, just ordinary drama involving someone who is way more ordinary than he thinks he is.

As some of you know, I am a musician, and for the last 16 years I have been playing in the worship band at my church.  I sing, I play guitar, I play keys, I run the sound system, whatever is needed, I love to be a part of this ministry.  It's very rewarding.  Those who have known me for a while also know that in 2010 we had a pastor whose head got too big and he dissolved our team and hired a rockstar type of worship leader, and I was the one who really raised hell about it.  My exile concluded about a year and a half later when both of them were gone.

For the next nine years I worked with three different leaders, and for the most part they were all pretty great.  I've been singing since I was very young, and over that time I've learned a lot of music theory, a lot of technique, and the ability to work well in an ensemble.  In this environment it's not supposed to be about me, but I will humbly say that I have fans.   :)

So the most recent guy who was brought in ... is kind of ... different.  He sings like a bad version of Bob Dylan, which is not exactly what one wants in a worship setting.  Remember, our job is to lead others, not to "perform".  Lately on the weeks when I am participating, I'm playing keyboard.  Now this is fun, and I'm spending more time developing a talent that I hadn't really focused much on before.  But I really want to sing.  And I can totally sing and play at the same time, that's not a problem.  I've bugged him a couple of times about it, and last week he finally offered to spend some time talking about "working on a vocal plan".

Bottom line, he thinks my style is all wrong, my harmonization is all wrong, I don't blend well and supposedly the sound guy has to turn me down, and he thinks I need to take voice lessons.  Naturally, he whitewashed it in nicer words, but that's the message.  Right.  A decade and a half of getting compliments over how great the band sounds when I'm singing.  People telling me that when I work with other male vocalists I sound like Art Fucking Garfunkel.  And now this guy has the nerve to tell me that I suck and I need to take voice lessons so I can blend with him.

Yeah buddy, I'm hearing ya loud and clear.  I'm certain that he just doesn't want to be upstaged.  And that's a shame because that's not what I do.  I'm part of a team.  I suggested that if he thinks my harmonization is wrong, we should be working with music that has the parts written out instead of just working off chord charts.  He says that we can't get those anymore, which is bullshit.  I think the deep dark secret is that he can't read music.

I can tell you one thing he and I agree on: ONE OF US has a vocal style that isn't right for this space.

Originally I said to myself, ok, I'll play his little game, I'll find a place to take a few voice lessons and see what happens.  After a few days of thinking about it, praying about it, working through some ideas, I'm now thinking, fuck that noise.  I think I'm going to just use this season to focus on the keyboard and develop that talent a bit more.  Because one thing I know is, I'm going to be there long after he's gone.  And I'm not going to let him know that I think he's a douchebag because I've tried that before and although I never lose a pissing contest, sometimes the short term fallout is unpleasant for me.

Hmm ok so perhaps its not the QA department after all.

Doing more digging about what was going on..  A month ago they had to make some temporary schema changes to fix another issue and do cleanup. They tested that in our dev system.  Moved it to prod, ran the cleanup ( took 3 weeks ) then put it back to stock.

this test upgrade was supposed to be done on a recent copy of prod ( like from Monday ), restored onto dev. Looks like that never actually happened, and a bunch of stored procedures are hosed. ( which i could fix i guess, but that is not my responsibility and wont make it a fair test anyway )

Still sloppy and unacceptable, but i want to blame the correct team of theirs :)    

Really getting tired of this software vendor at the office. 

Ever since they were cut loose from vmware ( long story. short version they were bought, kept for a bit, then turned back loose and lost a lot of their people in the process but had more customers ) and did their reorg a year later ( basically firing 1/2 who were left ) its been a s-hole company to work with. Non responsive, aimless etc.

Last update we got, one task was to fix a bug they introduced in a commonly used feature over a year ago. Now it does not work at all with a big fat error..  really... cant notice that during testing? Oh ya, no testing!   The update before that, were more show stopper regression bugs than fixes and we had to wait, with my users not being happy.

My account has been broken for 3 days now.    While i did get in with an admin account and created a 2nd account to use, i didnt tell them this.  So far one email asking questions i already answered when i opens the ticket.  Grrr    I could fix it, but not the right way and i want it the right way for when it happens to a end-user.

~5 months ago we upgraded to a dot release. Lost the reporting module ( expected ). This weekend we finally get its replacement. a pile of dog poo, with hardly anything in it.   AND the system went down hard Saturday morning, "well, we think it was due to us installing that, we are not sure. "     We waited almost a year to upgrade to this dot release in the first place. Too many bugs, took them that long to get it to where we could even use it. "oh, we are going to hire some QA people soon... "

I do understand that they switched platforms on this release for the client and went from OCX to HTML5, ( years later than it should have been but they had an excuse ) but you still test the hell to of it and dont release it with *major* bugs that effect all customers. Due to the disaster it was, several long term customers ( upwards of 20 years for a couple of them i know personally ) bailed. 

As much as i hate to, its time for us to ditch these jokers.  10+ years with them, and every bit of our operations are tied to it somehow. Both for us and 20 other business units..  

I was thinking of Proxmox. Their "You're on your own," model works pretty well. 

Basically, they've got it set up ideally so you can learn it in a home lab, run it in a home lab, run it as a DIY project... but if you're going to run it as an ESX alternative in a corporate environment - it will behoove you to pay the licensing fee and get support.

And dont get me wrong, i'm 100% ok with commercial products.  Its the 'lets pretend and see who we can trick' ones that piss me off.  Just be honest about it is all i ask. You can make money being honest, really you can.

My preference of course is 100% open code, and if you want/need support from the developers, you can pay $ to get it.  Even "priority bug fixes" to paying customers is ok. ( just roll them in eventually.. ).  i guess i'm ok with paying for custom modules too, that never get rolled in. As long as normal development of new stuff does.

I visited a website today, I heard they were having a sale on discounted merchandise.  I was greeted with this:

I wasn't, unless they stopped in the street and tried to block me then they were done for. I refuse to be a victim of that nonsense.  I suspect they were trying to shatter my windows then hit me with more rocks to get me to stop. It all happened far too fast to call cops at the time, and after it was over, not worth calling them out to see me.  Tho i did submit a complaint with them when i got home, just so they know something happened down in that area.

Even if i was still 25 and did consider it, they went into apartments, with one way in one way out, so a great place for them, having the home turf advantage, and with their other buddies that live there.  I could take on 2 if i had to, but not an entire gang.

Did you put anything on it? Foot wounds suck. They're one of those areas that are impossible to keep clean and that literally bear all your weight. With a dog or animal, getting them to be immobile until it heals enough is the challenge. You can't just put a cone around a dog's paw.

I guess i was different, even alone i always considered ramifications of what i did. Cleaned up after myself, didnt disrupt the world by screaming and yelling.  Hell I wouldn't even cut thru someone else's yard while out running around.. "its not my yard, stay off it" )

Even when older, i kept the party in doors and we even took peoples keys so no one got hurt, or hurt someone else.

I think it boils down to life experience. Idealistic wide eyed children are easily fooled and manipulated.  But as one gets older, you ( hopefully ) begin to see reality for what it is, and then realize how flawed and self-serving liberalism actually is.

I'm waiting for the guy who was dressed in dark, hip hop fashion, in an area where cars were being reported broken into, and then ran from the cops, hid in the shadows, and came out suddenly holding some object in his hand pointed toward the cop - and gets shot...

I've worked with guys like this - and they do generally insist that profiling exists and there is a presumption of guilt based on skin color in this country. 

But they also tend to admit if you're not up to shady shit, in MOST of the country - you're not going to get murdered by cop JUST for being black. You've got to fail a few other critical tests before you get to the murdered/beaten by cop stage. 

Frankly - I think that pretty much applies regardless of skin color. If you fail a couple of critical checkpoints when having an unfortunate interaction with the police where YOU are their suspect - you can quickly go from "This is a real inconvenience" to "shots fired, send an ambulance."

I understand making this choice. 

If I could go back and choose a pseudonym for my earliest published writing - I probably would - but I became a semi-public person under my real name. 

And I've been getting death threats and harassment since the Internet started. 

By at least one guy who ended up in prison for murdering someone, and then had his sentence extended for trying to take out another hit while in prison. 

I guess I've become a little calloused to the threats.

I've sometimes considered this - but the hassle of setting up "sock puppet" accounts is more effort than I want to put into it.

Bingo. I learned a long time ago to use a "disposable name" when slaying dorks on large sites. The things I tend to say on those sites are politically incorrect, often in very poor taste (but they deserve it), but not illegal.


I wish I could share some of the names I've used, because they're usually pretty damn funny. But that would obviously be counterproductive.

This is really pissing me off because so many stores do it.  You can "Order online and pick up in store in one hour" and there is a price.  If you go to the store for the item it is a higher price.  They won't give you the online price in the store.

I would think it would cost more money to pay someone to get the item and bring it out to the car then it would be for me to pick up the item for myself.

PetSmart and Walgreens both do this.

Most TV ads for VPN services are aimed at technology illiterate folks. They're cash grab companies and, now that I think of it, they target older American conservatives who are paranoid about technology. 

Lots of my friends were VERY concerned about contact tracing apps - yet they're all walking around with BT turned on ALL the time, even if they aren't using it. 


But - you can't help those folks. They're part of the school of fish/herd - and they rely on safety in numbers. Not all of them are *supposed* to survive. 

The implication was that 'if you use this vpn, this wont happen to you'.

There's the thing. 5G isn't really about speed, it's about density. They made the range shorter in exchange for the ability for more transmitters to simultaneously access the same cell. For a typical human with a phone in their pocket, it doesn't really amount to much of a difference.

5G is far more about IoT than it is about your phone. I suppose that means more surveillance, which is a reasonable driver of fear. The kind of "bugs" you see in spy movies, that are tiny and can transmit back to a receiver far away, are probably going to become within reach to the average consumer, which seems like a reasonable driver of fear.

I have some other thoughts about smart appliances, but I'll post elsewhere.

Yes. i even have reloading hardware in case it gets worse. And bullet molds. While its not 'hard' its still not trivial to do, correctly.   And you can only reload brass so many times, slowly eating into your ( currently ) finite supply.  Primers are scarce too.    ( or caps, if you go black powder to avoid the reload treadmill )

Today, ya id get in trouble in my yard, as i no longer live out on several acres in the country.  However, one of my son-in-laws does.    

In theory, this solves all the problems, for a low cost. AND i dont have to head out of town to do it.. ( or pay for range time. All our free ranges have dried up around here )

So, guys, you know we've invented this thing called gunpowder. It solves this problem - and you don't even have to think about the mechanics by which it works. You point the bang-ey end at the target, and pull the trigger, and holes appear in what you're aiming at. 

It is all pretty cool. 

You probably can't do it in your backyard though - unless you have a big back yard, or live in an area where you would have plausible deniability.

Any pistol crowssbow you can reload with one hand in a reasonable amount of time is bound to deliver too small of a hit as to be a viable weapon.

 

I do agree, when it all falls apart, functional firearms are not at all hard to manufacture ad-hoc in a garage.Sure, having a lathe and mill like some of us do does make it far easier, but its not a barrier for entry. Even with no power tools, it can be done. Just a lot of elbow grease. The problem is always the ammo.  While its not impossible to start from scratch, its not trivial. 

Related to my crossbow, it was not uncommon for us go go to the range several times a month using normal calibers and what we carry..   But, back when Obama came into office, with the shortage/prices then i switched to 22.  Eventually even picked up a couple of pellet guns as there seemed like no end in sight. This shortage we are in now, its effecting everything... and i dont see it ever getting better. Only worse.

So, what happens with these things is they distill through their culture and their community. Someone from Nation of Islam gets high with someone from the BHI movement, and they share their ideas. Those dudes then go hang out with a dozen other people, who post on Facebook, and it distills through their network of friends, until I'm listening to some guy at the warehouse who isn't actually affiliated with either spreading some bastardization distilled through the street.

The weirdest thing about modern society is that more and more frequently, conspiracy theories split along partisan lines.

Not always, if someone is a flat-earther and believes in a satanic Zionist conspiracy theory - I'm generally 95% certain I can tell you other things about that person without ever seeing or meeting them. The Anti-Semitic Flat Earthers are almost all getting information distilled from the Nation of Islam - and you can tell by the rhetoric of the conspiracy that this is where it is coming from, once you've heard it from enough people to put the common link together.

I had an epiphany about the Anti-Vaxxers recently when I watched a show about this blonde woman who had moved to a rural home and was home schooling her children. Some of the things she said made me go... "Oh! She believes in a vast Right Wing conspiracy for sure!"

One of my mother's friends believed in the shape shifting lizard alien theories. I'm not THAT bad - it is an exaggeration  -  but there is absolutely an element of that involved. I found myself thinking, "I'd be a much more loved technology blogger and outspoken partisan hack if my readers couldn't actually engage directly in conversation with me."

I'm really a bitter old hermit. I was thinking about that today. I have a pretty big social media presence and a lot of followers, enough that people on the "opposition argument," tend to claim I have an echo chamber of fans and followers who follow me around and dog-pile when I get in a disagreement. 

None of them followed me to my BBS. Very few people have followed me. I'm not THAT popular that my echo chamber all signed up to hear more of my brilliant intellect. 

And I'm actually OK with that. There are a handful of people I'd like to join, because they're interesting people, and most of them aren't from my "echo chamber," actually. 

But - I'm also OK with where it is right now - and have reservations about more people showing up.
