I'm not sure why so many of you still have a pathological hatred reserved for Microsoft.

The company itself did a bunch for the industry - gave a bunch of us very lucrative careers, and made computers in general far more accessible.

As far as the idea of the evil empire and the WinTel duopoly...

If you haven't noticed, Facebook, Twitter, Google and Amazon have done arguably and demonstrably more *EVIL* in the world on platforms inarguably (and most of you have bragged about this at some point in the last 20 years) built on FOSS technologies.

Free and Open Source Software is responsible for a host of evil empires that stand shoulder to shoulder with *anything* that closed source software has ever unleashed on the world.

So, maybe it isn't the *licensing model* that is the problem... or the solution.

Apple, Atari, Commodore, Texas Instruments ... they all had a Microsoft BASIC.
And their first attempt at a software monopoly was on the "MSX" computers, but they never really took off in the US.

I spent most of that era tinkering with CP/M. In that world, Microsoft BASIC (known as MBASIC) was a distant second to Digital Research CBASIC.

For many of us, burn us once like they did and you can never redden yourself.  And they burnt us all, a lot of times.

Again, the pathological focus on Microsoft, seems a lot like *still* complaining about the Nazis while conveniently ignoring the greater damage that Socialism/Communist regimes have done and continue to do to humanity.

I mean - the FOSS model *enabled* Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon - and you're going, "Let's not blame the IDEA - the IDEA can work, it is the people who implement the idea who are the problem."

Maybe the idea is just as prone as the other idea to lead to the abuses by the people - and there should be more discussion of that. FOSS has proven to be a WORSE thing for society than Closed Source "Microsoft" practices, IMHO.

I think you are abusing the "kids starving in Africa" argument.

I _do_ complain about both Nazies and Communists the same way I _do_complain about Microsoft and the Facebooks of this world. I hate them all.

Microsoft is less bad than it used to be, but they are clearly responsible of trying to lock a lot of platforms down so they get to control what you can run on it. ANd the only reason why their spyware empire is not as evil as any other spyware empire is that they are just worst at it than Google. It is not like they haven't tried.

Seriously, you need to have a fucking Microsoft account to use tools that should in no way require you to have an online account of any sort. That sort of crap you don't get in other software deployment models.

I find your lack of hatred for Microsoft disturbing.

You will NOT give credit to Microsoft for trends that were already happening, with or without them. They did NOT make computing more accessible. That would imply they created something. Anything. In reality they held the industry BACK by squashing competition and hampering innovation.

Microsoft made its fortune on its business practices, not its technology.
Hard stop. If it weren't for Bill Gates' mother having connections inside IBM, most likely Digital Research would have led the 16-bit era. CP/M would have eventually given way to some sort of Unix and we'd have gotten to where we are now at least a decade earlier.

Make no mistake: Bill Gates is the single worst person in the history of humanity. My most sincere wish is for him to be fed feet-first into a wood chipper. And even that is more humane than he deserves.

Today's Microsoft is friendlier to open systems, open standards, and open source than anyone could have imagined 20 years ago. That's a good thing, without a doubt. But it doesn't excuse the trail of destruction that they left in their wake. It doesn't excuse the lying, cheating, and stealing that amassed the fortune they required to get into their current lines of business.

Now they're a cloud company. If you've ever logged into Azure you can tell it is a blatant ripoff of AWS. Microsoft has never created anything new and they're not going to start now. But at least as a cloud company they are finally participating in Linux and Open Source, because it now makes them money without their having to control it.

Did I mention Bill Gates? His god complex is now bigger than ever, and he needs to be taken down. Hard.

Didn't google do it first? ( not at the same scale of course but i thought they were in the commercial cloud space before amazon )

But its sort of like the trashcan icon argument when neither actually developed it i guess...  it was actually done before all of them by IBM with their mainframes  ( ya a few others might have beat them out slightly but IBM did it larger than the rest )

Google, IBM, Sun, and a bunch of others were building ideas of what they called "utility computing" or "grid computing" before the really stupid term "cloud computing" became universal. Google's offering was platform-as-a-service rather than infrastructure-as-a-service for a long time before they gave in and started offering dedicated virtual machines.

Microsoft, on the other hand, did absolutely nothing new. They simply built a clone of AWS.

I plan like its already happened, and reduce the exposure as much as i can.

Again... pathological hatred.

Without the dominant business approach - you're going to fail, even with the superior product.

And if you can leverage an advantage - in a Machiavellian sense (either you won't be punished, or if you are punished, the punishment is less than the advantage you gain) you must - or you won't be the dominant business.

This is a core foundation of conservative free-market principles.

Gates was better at the ENTIRE package than anyone else. Jobs was better at the ENTIRE package than anyone else. That is why their names are famous, and the others are footnotes that only nerds know about.

Bell was BETTER at the ENTIRE package than anyone else. Tough luck, Tesla.

Metallica was BETTER at the entire package than anyone else - even if Megadeth does have more integrity.

We can apply it to just about *anything* where people are upset because their better horse lost the race.

Including Trump's defeat. He was outsmarting them at every point - but eventually, he ran into a scenario he couldn't outmaneuver them on - at least, temporarily. Going for that final impeachment and not getting it keeps him in the race as a potential problem...

I don't care what MIGHT have happened in some alternate timeline where the Nazis won and CP/M and *nix became the mainstream user operating systems for business. It didn't happen. So, Microsoft made the contribution to society.

It just *is*.

Hell, Andy Grove spoke out about this. He is *anti-offshoring* and *anti-outsourcing* - and he thinks it is damaging the economy. He said so. Intel censured him and he has since taken a pro Intel approach to the issue.

But he basically said, "I think the Government needs to regulate this and prevent us from doing it. Right now, our competition does it, so we must do it, or our competition will out-compete us. We have no choice."
