What, no "Hi mom" messages? I zone out and view them all in a daze like viewing the screen in The Matrix movie and just perk up for the interesting bits. Don't yet have 2012 in production, but that sounds less interesting than the installing update 12 of 20102120 of 2008 server.
As an OS boots, I like to watch the messages for anything that stands out.
They can hint to other problems.

Heh. Then nothing beats linux, where you can watch the boot process, one line of the script at a time!!!
1. Make the ESC key work to switch from the splash to an actual boot progress screen
2. *Animate* the damn thing so we know it didn't hang!
As if a more verbose windows server boot screen would shed any light on any problem....

And of course the error code is generated randomly and will never be the same, even if you reboot and it hangs at the same place. Or it is non-random, but also without meaning, so nobody else on the internet got it. Or, if they had it, 12 people will give you 25 explanations and "solutions", which are all garbage and do not work in your case. They can stick their verbosity up their arses until they choke on it.
Nobody did crash screens quite like Commodore. When the Amiga crashed, you got that famous "Guru Meditation" box.
Now that was a random hex address I didn't mind seeing.

Solution:
1. install your favorite flavor of linus
2. once up and running on-net, grab VirtualBox from the oracle site and install that.
3. install WinBlowz in a virtual box.
4. Done. You now have the best of operating systems and the ability to visit Micro$lop Hell whenever you want - without the worry of Micro$lop trashing the machine. If that happens, it is a VIRTUAL BOX - just delete and reinstall.

As will the new machine I will be building in early December. The *only* thing that I use that absolutely requires Micro$lop is my music composing software. Everything else I do exists on linux. So it will be a virtualBox for music writing and that's about it.
as I mentioned earlier I made the mistake to try out the oracle FS which turned out to be a desaster.
the vm wouldn't deliver proper audio anymore, it would freeze every now and then while doing a phone call.
re-formatting to ext4 fixed the problem.
Next problem is, howto get the VM-Image if you're bound to use a company pre-built windows, if it has to authenticate to the domain etc. etc.
But work at gemalto could be effectively described as Yak-shaving with long delays for each step of the process...
so not being bound to "security to be free" (the company slogan) anymore is a big relief in every aspect.

How to they get you the "golden image" to install? If it comes on dvd, just install from that to your vm. If it is an iso, just install the vm from that. I would think they would need a mac address to work from, so you could use Libvir / KVM / Qemu to have things stable enough to have a portable vm (albeit in xml format - yuck).
On linux (and OSX), most of the time I try wine first. There is really a wide range of programs which actually run fine with it. The only times I really need a windows is for administering my Samba4 Active Directory Server and when I use the historical-critical edition of the almost complete works of Nietzsche. It is a 16bit application and it does run in Wine, but it crashes when I want to copy some text from it and the copied text does not go to the clipboard. I know that there are other Nietzsche tools, but this one is based on the Colli/Montinari stuff, so I dare to quote it for university papers.
Oh, and some telephone systems have win-only configuration software.
Nota bene: Never try to attempt a firmware flash for a mobile phone via usb connected to a VM, at least not with virtualbox. It might brick your phone.

There was a commercial livecd which was meant to be a whole preconfigured musicstudio, but I forgot the name. It was in the pre-ubuntu days, maybe it is dead now.

It's a thing called Noteworthy Composer.

I like it and it's what I've taken the time to learn thoroughly. I am not willing to do that with others, even though there are many people that rightly claim them to be superior.
Noteworthy allows me to concentrate on what I want to do - write music - without having to have a "geek side" handy to keep it working.
And as far as I know, it requires Windows. I'm sure it will run in a VirtualBox and do not want to fool with WinE.
I can totally understand the "My workflow is perfect with this software" argument. Probably one of the reasons many people do not want to switch to linux.
The NoteWorthy Composer looks "simple" enough to be run in wine, though. It doesn't seem to depend on too many system components, etc.
