Of course. Because Windows 8 is a phone, not a computer.

So, restored two different laptops to factory default with win8 with the recovery function.

Reason on laptop one:

It had two different gpus, but would recognize them properly. Or rather, it wouldn't use the nvidia dedicated gpu. Effect after reset to factory default image: It still is not able to use the proper gpu. After some hours, the Dell repair tool started to work again, but said all was good. After more hours, the nvidia gpu works, but hdmi and vga out still do not work.

Reason on laptop two:

SNAFU (pdfs in built in email client wouldn't work anymore. they were unreadable.) Effect after reset: Bluescreen (or is it purple screen now?) directly after initial setup. Computer installed about 120 updates but after reboot said "Something went wrong, reverting everything I did." This took about 12h so far.

Both computers belong to clients of mine, both could probably have afforded a Macbook Pro for the combined service hours I wasted on their machines.

DISCLAIMER: Only buy original(tm) MS(tm) Software(tm) or else your TCO will shoot through the ceiling(tm).

I had that happen to me - turned out that the HDMI port was physically broken. The store (BestCry) took care of it and the laptop came back to me with all hardware working flawlessly.

Still running Win8.1 which, for the use I give that laptop, is actually ok with me. Web browsing, and one of *the* best craigslist searching tools I've ever seen. It (the laptop) is essentially just a fun toy and a "communicating device" when travelling. I would never EVER dream of using Win8.x for ANYTHING involving real production use.

That is exactly what I am expecting, too. Broken hardware.

That, sir, is no excuse!

Then find me a good tool for searching craigslist that will allow me to specify the craigslist area(s) [more than one at a time] and then return the results, by area, in a clean and incredibly usable format.

One of the projects I'm on apparently uses SharePoint. I don't, though.
Not if I can help it.

It was a sharepoint joke, must have been deleted from the Linux community.

Bought Orifice 2013 Home & Business for a client, without install medium. Wanted to download it, need a Microsoft Live Account. This is so stupid.

New computers are coming out of the box with a gun pointed at the user, threatening to kill all puppies and kittens in a 100 mile radius unless the user creates a Microsoft Live account. It's too bad that non-Windows laptops cost more than Windows laptops. I hated giving any amount of my hard-earned money to the Great Satan of Redmond. I booted up the new machine and once getting past the LOG IN TO MICROSOFT LIVE NOW, BITCH screens, found that 'doze 8.1 is TOTALLY FREAKING UNUSABLE.

And of course the machine came preloaded with so much crapware that I couldn't even turn off the virus checker, which insisted that the Debian installer for Windows is malware.

Until Microsoft cancels the Windows product entirely and exists solely as a software publisher for other platforms, Satya Nadella can die in a car fire.

You can create an account without a MS Live account, but it is so hidden, that it borders on illegality. You need to click "decline" or something two times and then there is an optiion. It is worse with 8.1, it was better with 8.0.

Still, Windows 8 might be a brake through for mass market OSX and Linux penetration.

There's a $5 product called "Start 8" that puts the start menu feature back into Winblows 8. It doesn't do anything for the apps that actually run inside that horrid Metro interface, but it does make it easier to get back to being something that resembles being functional.
