Stay sharp, trust no-one, keep your laser handy, and remember - the

I thought, briefly, for a moment, that this meant to build laser sights on to one's otherwise ballistic pistol. For defense only obviously.

Today at 2:15pm all cell phones in the United States will receive a test of the emergency broadcast system.  When everyone's phones start shrieking don't panic.

Better yet, run through the office screaming "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

Predictably, the hordes of mindless commies on Twitter reaced as if the alert had something to do with the current President.

Everyone already knew the left would respond this way.  I am sure the right would respond much the same way if a democrat was president.

Hmm... I wish I'd thought to do that.

I just chuckled and kept writing more code.

I first learned about this system when it was being implemented, while the Kenyan Kommie was occupying the White House. I thought to myself, "hmm, I hope he doesn't abuse this for political purposes. If he does, I will have to root my phone to disable it."

I'm actually surprised he left it alone, but he did, and even though I wish him a thousand painful deaths for other reasons, I give him credit for leaving that alone.

This was the first test of the Presidential alert..... The system wasn't even in place for Obama to abuse.

I remember seeing it on my Galaxy S3, you couldn't turn it off and the idea was there but not operational.

Remember the Emergency Broadcast System going into operation on 9/11?  Neither do I.

Which kinda shows the futility of the emergency broadcast system.

It's from a bygone 50s-inspired era. Today, we have so many ways to receive news, it seems unlikely anyone would miss a major national event, even without an emergency broadcast system.

But, y'know how governments are. Suffering with the weight of its own inertia...

Actually I'm good with it on my phone. Cause honestly. There are times I really prefer to get away from everything. If there's something really big happening, I'd like to know.

I think it's a good idea to have the ability to send a nationwide alert to everyone's phones in the event of a widespread urgent emergency. It's even ok that such an alert requires authorization from the President. It isn't managed *by* the
President. It's managed by FEMA, and has been in the works for a long time.
It was a mistake to call it a 'Presidential Alert' because the usual gang of lunatics expectedly went and associated it with ${current_president} and went down the usual hysteria rabbit hole from there.

On the other hand, the Emergency Alert System is becoming increasingly obsolete, since the number of people likely to be consuming traditional media in real time is declining rapidly.

O hai, I've been having a lot of fun in meatspace since my last login around 09-25, as I've been unemployed since end of Aug. I highly recommend unemployment; it's good for the soul.

I got the Presidential Alert, in theory; but it wasn't much of an alert since I didn't hear the audible signal, wondered why I didn't get it, and then eventually found it buried in my phone's notification history. The system is clearly inadequate. Every citizen needs a chip in their brain to make sure they get the message.

o hai. I had noticed you'd gone quiet and looked up the date of your (then) most recent login last week. May you either find employment or continue to be unemployed, depending on your current target status.

Hi LS.. Unemployment and time to reflect might be very good for the soul.. But what does one see when one reflects?

I was on vacation.  My wife and I drove from New England to Virginia, spent ten days there and returned last night.  We visited some friends en route, so it wasn't a straight shot.  Long drive.  My laptop died on day two which explains my almost complete absence.

I'm now using a Windows 10 laptop that I bought and mothballed two years ago.  Not enjoying the transition.
