I'm going to assume you've got the Adaptive suspension... Bilstein makes replacement dampers, which are drop-in replacements and compatible with the electronic control. Might be worth looking into.

Beyond that, it's custom springs.

I also considered a rear deck spoiler to add a little more downforce on the rear wheels.

I find it interesting that this person describes almost exactly the same sensation:

if the car was originally ordered with all seasons, it will have 225 section width tires all around. if it was ordered with performance tires, it will be 245 in the rear. might make a difference.

All these fancy cars.

My little car, does not even have power steering ( which is fine by me actually... ).   Tho it does have power windows, which is nice as you cant reach over to the other side for manual.  You have a huge center console in the way, that hides the gas tank. Keeps weight in the middle. Be dumb to have mid engine just to screw it up that way.

It was originally purchased in Georgia with all seasons - so it does have 225s.

So... maybe I'll start with staggered rubber with 245s in the rear.

Got any ideas for a source where I could pick up two rear 245 wheels matching my factory 225s in the front? I like the look of them.

Looks like you've probably got style 436M, 18x7.5 on all four corners.
There are two options for this wheel style - regular, or orbit grey.

For the rear, you want the 18x8.0 version of this wheel style.

Last time I bought a set of 4 BMW wheels (for my winter tire setup) I just did a junkyard search on car-part.com and ended up driving about 40 minutes to a place on Long Island that had the identical style to my stock setup.

I think I most likely have code 2TR style 436M (front/rear 18.75 225/40 R18) factory wheels (and I'd need to find a set of factory code 2PG, style 436M rear wheels if I wanted to go 18x8, 245/35 R18 staggered while keeping my factory front wheels.

The tires are Perelli Cinturato P7 all season run flats 225/40R18s all around.

How much did the set of 4 cost you from the junkyard?

They were not cosmetically quite perfect -- so it was $100 a pop, or $400 total.

Maybe I should add - these were 17"ers from a 2014 model year, so maybe not as pricey as some of the 18's.

You've led me down a rabbit hole that is going to be expensive.

Did you know that if you opted for the 225 All Seasons all around on a M235i the electronic limit locked into the ECU was 130 MPH?

Neither did I.

Really the only way to fix it is a custom ECU tune.

So... in addition to two new wheels, and probably Michelin Super Sport rubber all around, I'm also probably going to have to get an ECU flash.

I've reached out to a local tuner. I suppose it is going to probably run less than $2000 and it'll probably bump me to somewhere around 360 HP - right around an M2.

I'm wondering what kind of complications this is going to lead to. I like to run MOSTLY stock. But... what the hell. I suspect an intercooler will probably be next.

And then smogging might get interesting in the future.

Nice of them not to allow you to have what you bought.

meh, yeah, I'm not a fan of the wheel/tire shenanigans that they play just to get you to bump up to a higher trim level.

I know. It is pretty typical Bimmer bullshit though. It does remind me of Cisco selling you an entire switch but only opening the number of ports you've "licensed". There is no extra cost... there isn't a COST savings to you...

What they did was increased their PROFIT margin by selling you something crippled and then charging you more to enable what was already a sunk cost for them.

It basically admits, "We could have turned a profit selling you this with everything on it enabled... but this way, we can gouge you to have the FULL abilities of what we already sold you."

The difference is that BMW can claim plausible liability on selling you a car with tires that aren't the best suited to the car. But they should absolutely have to take off that limiter if any owner, at any time, removes those lesser tires and replaces them with ones to spec for the higher speed limit.

The fact that THIS isn't possible - is bullshit. "If I bought it from the factory, and put these wheels and tires on it, it would have a top speed 30 MPH faster than it does, but because someone went with inferior tires when it was new, that limit is 30MPH and can NEVER be changed?"

"Yup"...

Yeah - but tuners cracked the ECU security and are able to disable that speed limiter - so it isn't that you CAN'T do it if I get the right tires. It is that you WON'T - because it makes a certain percentage of the cars you sold less attractive in the aftermarket.

Didn't you Germans start a world war and attempt genocide on the premise that some people were engaging in unethical market practices? Asking for a friend...

Got a sunburn too. ON MY HEAD...   never had that happen before.

It was very disappointing the first year that happened to me ... obviously it meant that I had lost enough hair for it to happen.

Not as bad as a few years ago when I got a sunburn on the top of my belly.

Putting on rear tube fenders today, after i ruined the stock ones a week or so ago.  3rd bolt.  Threads gave way 1/2 up the bolt.  No good way to safely get in there to cut it out.   Frustrating.

it doesn't *need* them all but that bolt may rattle.  Squirted some sealant on the backside. see if that works.

Nope. That absolutely will not happen unless I get a full carpet up top first.

Finally got rear tubes on.  didnt turn out all that bad.  I will extend the rock guards tho.  There was something that was there, just under the logo, before i did the fenders.  its gone now.

( and yes i know. blue car needs paint. bad.   I dont have a good place to do it the right way, so i haven't.  The OO of it screwed the paint up just before i bought it ( some 20 years ago ). so its a monumental task. I have to strip it 100% down to plastic or it will just come right back off. )
