Well, I'm not quite sure how you could expect Fecesbook to *not* flag something called "Wall of Hate" as a "hate site" even if they aren't looking at it.

That having been said, the error that Zooer got was probably related to your use of a self-signed certificate. Check out the Citadel Security room for a conversation about how we're fixing that.

That has more to do with me hosting it on a residential ISP, not having a real certificate, using a redirect from my registrar through a DDNS redirecting service - basically breaking all the rules of good web-page design possible - which makes it look like a Phishy AF site. I wouldn't trust it if I were Google, either. It looks like it is up to no good. :)

And honestly, not for that reasons, but it isn't exactly a savory part of the Internet to visit. :)

Agreed. Self signed cert that doesn't remotely match the name of the site external visitors are visting. There are like two degrees of "Nope, that doesn't match," between the name the cert is signed for and the site that visitors are typing in. :D

I figure that most experienced users will ignore that and visit anyhow. :)

I find Hetzner is fine if you want to run your application on a cheap VPS. For domain management I use a local registrar most of the time. That said, most of the time I just self host and pay for an actual static IP and a business connection.

There are colo firms offering colo for raspberryes. You could send them your raspberry and let them host it for you in a network with static ips and the like. Just an idea.

I feel like a business account hosted locally would probably be too expensive for how casual and informal my goals are with running this BBS.
But a colo that would just take the Pi and give me remote access to it might be a nice alternative. Of course, I'll still probably face the hurdle of, "WHAT is the domain name you want to host?!?"

Another option you have is to just get a very small/cheap VPS somewhere, and use it only to forward connections to your server at home. Hosting providers don't need to know your domain name unless they're running your DNS (or reverse DNS, if you intend to send mail through it).

You could then use a VPN to connect your home server to the VPS, which neatly gets around issues related to having dynamic DNS and blocked ports at home.

Your domains should be registered with Epik and hosted on their DNS. They are "safe" in terms of not caving to the cancel mob.

Speaking of the free world ...

I hadn't realized how "almost completely like Chrome" some of the Chromium-derived browsers are now. I tried Edge for about ten minutes today, figuring that if it uses the same rendering engine as Chrome, then why not ... and after seeing the usual pile of MSN crap that can't be turned off, I immediately got rid of it and installed Brave. I know, I'm probably the last Free Speecher in the world to discover Brave, but I'm happy with it as my work browser.
On my home machine I installed Dissenter, which I guess is derived from Brave.

Brave protects the user from the censors/snoopers of Big Tech. Dissenter is downright hostile towards them.

Ok well then let me be the local person to enlighten the group :)

Brave is practically indistinguishable from Chrome, doesn't send your deepest darkest secrets to Google, and has integration with other privacy-based tools and services. Highly recommended.

Dissenter is also indistinguishable from Chrome, has all the features of Brave, but can be configured to be a bit more aggressive in what it blocks.
This is the one I prefer.

Both of them can import your bookmarks from the real Chrome and can even run Chrome extensions. So now that I'm searching with DuckDuckGo and browsing with Dissenter, my desktop web experience is Google-free except when I need to use YouTube.

So I tried Dissenter, I am using it now.  It knew my history from Chrome, and all my passwords. It knew all the profiles.

You guys are making me feel like an important person, because I alerady knew of Brave.

You should dig the story behind Brendam Eich, who was kicked out of Mozilla for supporting an anti same-sex marrigariage foundation. He then went to do work for Brave

Eich was a victim of cancel culture before it went super-mainstream. The mob has no business lynching people because of how they choose to donate their personal money. If he was donating the Mozilla Foundation's money on behalf of the organization, then the organization not only can, but must scrutinize how the money is being spent. But for personal donations, everyone should be free to donate as they see fit.

The problem with going after people this way is that *everyone* could eventually be impacted, because sooner or later someone's going to come along who doesn't like who *you* gave your money to. This is tyranny at its worst.

It's also why I don't go out of my way to eat at Chick-Fil-A anymore. The mob tried to cancel them in 2012, but the anti-mob patronized them more than ever ... but then last year they tried to appease the mob, and now everyone hates them.

Subject: The Cancel mob in motion against Baen.

I have just seen this link:
https://www.patreon.com/posts/47582408

The publisher has closed the forum down due to concerns regarding legal repercussions or mob cancelling.

Baen has a long story of being a target from the cancel culture mobsters.

ver-the-stupidest-thing-ever/

I predict that Baen will yield under pressure and that it will do it no good.

"[...]it has come to our attention that allegations about the Bar have been made elsewhere. We take these allegations seriously, and consequently have put the Bar on hiatus while we investigate. But we will not commit censorship of lawful speech."

Maybe I am paranoid, but it sounds to me like they want to contain the SJW horde while avoiding losing their fans (which are mostly conservatives as far as I have heard).

I don't think you can really do both. SJWs are actively _forcing_ people to pick a side. If you don't declare yourself a SJW you are an enemy of theirs.

It is hard to make this shit up. In my Spanish class, one year, the instructor would not let me go by "Donovan," because this is not a Latin name.

I took "David"... "dah-veed" - because this is a Latino name.

So as usual, it is mostly WHITE people who are not very worldly being outraged by thinking they own a thing, in this case, the name "David," which they don't - exposing their own weird sense of supremacy.

David also, is obviously not a name with origins among White Europeans, but among the Jews.

*shrug*

What morons.

That is the most fscking annoying part of Millennials. So many of them love to lecture and explain - and in so many cases it is all *theory* with little or no real-world experience or application.

They're very book-read on their philosophies and theories. They're well researched in Wikipedia articles on how they believe things should work.

But they're sorely lacking in actual experience.
