If they're claiming to be from .ninja, they probably aren't real ninjas anyway.

On a whim, this weekend I decided to see if I can configure AdBlock to filter "clickbait" sites out of the sites I read. It seems easy because the content appears to be generated by having the host site include a script that makes your browser go to the clickbait site to fetch content, so you just filter out those domains and you're good to go.

I've had success so far by adding the following two lines to my filter list:

||outbrain.com
||taboola.com

I'm surprised that no one is already maintaining a subscribable list of these cesspools. Does anyone know of more sites to add, or of any subscribable lists?

since I live in the city that addblock plus comes from, I can tell you that you can buy yourselves out of their line ;-)

Eyeo GmbH? I guess that's the company ... sometimes people confuse Adblock Plus with "Adblock", the one from those two idiots who appear on your screen and beg for money.

Anyway, it says "Eyeo GmbH, the company behind Adblock Plus, has no right to, or control over, any filter list content other than Acceptable Ads." So I guess you can pay to persuade them to consider your ads "acceptable" ?

...which works until someone publishes a subscribable list "advertisers who paid Eyeo but we want to block anyway." Funny how those things work.

As for the clickbaiters, so far I've found that blocking Outbrain and Taboola has been an excellent start.

I use noscript - blocking those advertisers also does a pretty good job in removing anoying adds. Though some remain.

But doesn't noscript also break a whole lot of web sites that actually need it?

yea, you need to find out which sites to enable. usually the advertizing ones are pretty obvious ;-)

I read an article the other day on how Facebook is the Walmart of the internet. It wasn't because Facebook
attacts the worst of the worst, it is because Facebooks design is to keep people from going elsewhere.

That's about the sum of it.  Everything about facebook is set up to keep you on facebook.  And to keep you coming back.  That's why they set up drama between your friends.

It's also the absolute central reason why I hate facebook.  As the operator of the digital equivalent of a mom-and-pop-shop that got "walmarted" by facebook, I do hope that Mark Fuckerburg dies in a car fire, is jump-started back to life by the EMT's, and then gets shot by the hospital manager upon arriving at the ER.  There is nothing in the universe worse than facebook.

Stupid indeed.  Here's a new one from this week:

http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2015/09/22/muncie-facebook-feud-ends-shooting/72644268/ ]

Get into a flame war on Facebook, then get shot in real life.  That's how it works.  Facebook is deadly and should be shut down.

Well...

If only the stupid use FB, and if people now get killed using FB, we can observe a very literal form of social Darwinism.

It might help save the earth.

I think FB should be nationalized and regulated as a government utility.

(Which is a fancy way of saying I want it gone.)

Wow ... I'm going to try this.

[ http://www.nomorobo.com/ ]

It's essentially a spam filter for your phone line. In order to use it, you have to have a phone service with "simultaneous ring" feature (basically any of the digital services support this). After you sign up, you set up your phone to simultaneously ring their scrubbing center's phone number (which is toll free, so they get to use ANI instead of CallerID). They compare the incoming number to a database of robo-callers, and if the number appears "clean" they give a busy signal, which causes the call to be sent only to your phone.
If the number is a known robo-caller, they answer the call and play a recording, so your phone stops ringing immediately.

Yes, I understand the privacy implications. I've weighed them and I'm willing to give it a try.

My digital internet phone service has a call blocking feature.

Although I wish it had the options, "send to voicemail" and "reject"

Mine does too, but Nomorobo has a database of douchebag dialers, so it can proactively reject calls for you. Kind of a neat business model too; they give away the simultaneous ring based service to consumers, and they sell database access to commercial subscribers.

It's Saturday morning here in uncensoredland, so I'm looking forward to not hearing from "cardholder services." I've talked to a few of them but I'm aways disappointed; they always hang up on me when I tell them I have $1.7 million in credit card debt. I guess they're just not set up to help someone in as much trouble as I am :)
