<laughing> Sorry RAgnar. But totally true and accurate. Security is work. Real work. If they want to have fun they should try working with the military and see what's expected of them.

What unholy manner of time manipulation is going on, that this day feels like it has dragged on longer than it should.

I have the opposite problem, my work days end just when I've started getting into the zone. It might just be because I'm the most productive in the late afternoon. Or it might just be because everyone else is focusing on wrapping up their day and stopped bugging me. :)

I love my job.

Looks like I'm in San Diego this week.

I was last in this area 20+ years ago, when I returned from Japan.

But I didn't get to look around at all.

I have today free to do that, but I'm probably going to be badly jetlagged, since I already seem to live in that timezone I've invented for myself in the Atlantic ocean, and I'm an additional 3 hours off from that.

Still, nice area. Beautiful weather. Hope I don't fall asleep during the conference, and that I learn whatever they want me to learn here.

Go to the gaslight district. You'll enjoy the crazies and they have great restaurants.

I didn't make it there, but I would have enjoyed crazies, to be sure.

I didn't have a lot of time to look around, really. I spent quite a bit of time with the convention, learning whatever I needed to learn there. I left the area too early to really take much in.

But, I still enjoyed some of San Diego, and I walked quite a bit. Which managed to help me keep my weight in line (even as I avoided eating too much).

Heh... funny to think that I now concern myself about such things.

I should post some of the pictures I took when I can. I managed to get one or two very nice pictures.

See that fleeb, you're being gaslighted. I hope Aahz has not convinced you that you are going insane.

He didn't have to. The glazed eye expression I generally see when I try to talk to people kinda confirms that.

fleeb has been insane. Not going.

And if you were at the convention center then you were right next to the district. But either way. San Diego is not a bad place to be for a couple of days. Did you rent a scooter?

I didn't rent a scooter. I walked most of the time. Or I used Uber for those places beyond walking (which would have been beyond a scooter, too).

But I saw them. Everywhere. Rentable scooters, just throw some money at it and it unlocks for your use. Conveniently located wherever the last person dropped it off. It's a damned neat idea, taking advantage of chaos like that.

I see bicycles like that in a town near me. Eyesores, with this horrid green bikes strewn everywhere.

I have never understood the point of using a scooter, rental or otherwise. Motorized scooters make more sense but I just don't understand the point of a scooter.

Bike rentals I understand, it makes more sense to buy your own bike but I understand.

These were motorized scooters. What's interesting is that people are paid to pick them up every night and charge them and then redistribute them again in the morning.

Bernie and AOC both agree with this, but the scooters are not necessarily redistributed to their original owners. <big stupid grin>

If I lived and worked in a city, I'd love to do the scooter thing. But I suspect I'd buy my own. A motorized scooter sounds like something that could quickly get damaged or simply worn down to the point of being unusable if it's being used by lots of different people every day. Are there numbers available regarding the profitability of the companies offering them?

As for me, I'm coming into the office even less than I used to, because I don't currently own a car. But something else has happened over the last few years. Even though my location is quite profitable, it's no longer a place where people like me are collaborating. So when I do go, there's nobody to work *with*. My team is spread all over the continent.

We all need to find new ways to collaborate. Doing it in person does not seem to be the way anymore.

My company is largely comprised of remote workers. It causes a lot of communication issues. I go into HQ 3 days a week specifically because of that. I also believe our overall output is lower, because we spend so much time trying to collaborate. Way too many conference calls. So many, you have to wonder when the work actually happens.

It's nice that we have some really great people that we otherwise might not have had.

But overall, people working together in person still seems to be more effective.

I agree.

Contacting someone over Skype or the like creates a kind of formality you normally don't experience when you want to just chat with someone about a design idea and need to beat it up. That formality gets in the way of the free flow of ideas.

On the one hand, it's good for allowing a developer to stay focused... fewer interruptions, and all that. But on the other hand, you can't bounce ideas off each other very well... or at least it forces you to choose particular times when to do that kind of thing.

We have a daily meeting at a regular time, but we only have that meeting for a few minutes. "What did you do, what are you doing, is anything holding you up?" Don't solve problems at this meeting, but maybe immediately following the meeting. It's semi-formal, in that I force us to stick to those three questions and avoid getting into solving any problems or other distractions until those have all been addressed by everyone.

And, generally, it works. They don't mind those meetings, we get shit done, yet we know what's going on, and we fix problems that we wouldn't otherwise know is happening.

However, I found my previous manager didn't understand the power of that style of meeting, and would always, *always* fuck it up by dragging the daily meetings to over 30 minutes. *Every* *fucking* *time*.
