I'm still seething mad at the person who threw me under the bus at work
a couple of months ago. Somehow that incident ended up snowballing
into an omnibus gripe list that got added to my HR file.
...which I've just discovered cancels my merit increase this year.

A check that will mostly be eaten by taxes anyway ( and only this month ). No baseline increase, not even to offset cost of living. However, the uppers, their salary nearly doubled.
And they wonder why morale here is poor.

Taxed or withheld? I could be remembering wrong, but I thought bonuses were withheld at a flat rate (40% sounds higher than i remember), but ultimately when you fill out your 1040 it just goes toward your AGI.
I guess technically withheld until its 'official', with the rest of my salary. But i never get a refund, i just break even, so same net result.

You don't want a refund. Tax refund means you were giving the government a 0% interest loan.
Oh, i wasn't complaining, ya i know how it works, the goal is zero.. just that i normally break even.

You're right, of course, but gosh it sure is nice to have some money dumped in your lap in the spring.
I usually use the money to do a fun project or something. This year it's going to go straight into paying bills. :(

Oh, that was on top of MFA.. ( i stopped calling it 2FA as around here you may see it 3 or 4 times trying to get in every morning, and some apps..... every.. single..time.... its insane )
Officially we are not supposed to use password managers, unless its the approved one, that the security team manages.
I recently encountered a client like that. They are also not allowed to write down their password anywhere, nor use any sort of password manager. Corporate apparently has never heard of 2FA. So what do they do? Everyone takes out their personal phone and screenshots their password. Which then goes to the clown in the sky, of course.

Or maybe don't. After all, I am everyone's favorite punching bag right now and they'd probably write me up for having a way to remember passwords. Back when I was in charge of that stuff we allowed any password that wasn't just "a word". Now we have ridiculous complexity requirements and we have to change it every 60 days. So I've got a password that's like "firstword@secondw0rd" and I just work my way across the keyboard changing the separating character to the next one on the row. You can't have a password that can be remembered, because that's insecure. You can't write it down, because that's insecure.

Apple refuses to give out personal in information on accounts ( good for them ), but was willing to send notices on behalf based on the email domain they used to register. So there is talk of scanning incoming mail for apple notices to find out who has an account.
I cant tell you how many apple devices we have, as windows is the 'official platform', however iOS is the official phone/tablet platform.

We old greybeards remember when the device on your desk was a green screen terminal and you only had access to what was provided on the host system.
Then personal computers came along.
All of IT is a big set of pendulums that swing back and forth over time.
One of the big pendulums is centralized vs. distributed control. Personally I'd be delighted to have the company send me a thin client and I can get rid of this stupid laptop that has all the trouble that comes with a windoze machine and just sits on the shelf, closed and plugged into the dock, 99% of the time.
When I want to do my own stuff I do it on my own computer. If I use their computer they're watching, and they can and will ding me for the kind of stuff I do outside of work.
