"Cool. I'm a 45 minute drive away in good traffic if I'm dressed and can leave immediately. When I'm on-call, if you're prepared to add at least an hour until it even gets looked at to the response time - you should modify the SLA to reflect that this is the reality if you want me to "just come in," as opposed to, you know, logging in from home and fixing it within 5 minutes of it going down..."

"So, Mr. Colbert, do you prefer Comcast, AT&T or other service provider for your new DSL line?"

But, we are not a tech firm either.

At Intel, I made them put in a DSL line even though I already had cable - just for remote work.

I'm a difficult employee - in that when employers play hard-ball with me, I tend to play, "Fuck you then fire me," back with them.

Darn. Personnel is having a meeting with all agency heads on the 25th to pass down their mandate about returning to the office.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. I predicted this summer all along, i wish i was wrong this time.

Increases travel costs ( both in gas and wear/tear.. i have not driven a thousand miles since last Feb.  Normally its about 50 miles a day and 1.5 to 2 hours a day lost in traffic.  Food costs go up ( even brown bag, takes more planning ).  clothing, pets now have to adjust, bla bla.

Stress goes up being there is all those 'people' breathing down your neck ( 100s just on my floor alone. upwards of 400 ). Less inclined to bother watching email after hours since i now lose so much time during the day just getting back/forth.  It dont sound like much, but it really was.  I got so much done around here that would drag into the evening before. And could stay up later to get stuff done if i wanted since i wasn't driving 45 mins in the morning

Have to dig out the headphones and make sure they still work.  Since we dont have cubes any more the noise is horrendous.

sigh.

Unless Facui comes up with another lie to lock us all down by then....

I just loved lockdown.

There was no traffic.

All my journey times were down.

My planner loved it, I loved it, the people I delivered to loved.

Every. Single. One of  you that can, should work from home for the rest of your life.

I mean seriously, it was driving in the 1970s

Around here more like the 80s, other than the fact there were now buildings and seas of concrete, instead of trees, grass, crops. ( another rant of mine )

But i do agree.

Dammit.

Personnel, who still think its 1955, passed down their return to office mandate yesterday to all agency heads.

Today a last minute "we are meeting at 2 to discuss return to work" ( by our department manager )

Yeah, we got "you can take off your mask in the office if you're vaccinated, unless someone asks you to keep it on, and we'll all be returning to the office after Labor Day."

Lucky for me I've been working from home for at least five years and will continue to do so. Keeping off the road because bella asked for it. :)

It of course is not end of world, i was at the office before ( tho eventually they started letting some of us work a day or 2 a week from home ), so its not like things 'changed' from when i first started and got sold a bill of goods. But i like it here. I used to work out of the house when i was doing network stuff ( and of course traveling between sites but never the 'office' other than to get parts if i didnt have time to ship ) and sort of forgot how nice it is.

oh well another 4 years i can tell them to stick it and still get full pension, if i can pay off the house by then and figure out medical insurance ( not nearly old enough for medicare.. )

"If you're vaccinated, you don't have to wear a mask, unless someone else has FEELINGS that you *should* wear a mask."

So, your office is operating on Slowest Ship in the Fleet principles. Basically, you *have* to wear a mask, regardless of the science.

LOL so just now we get an email from facilities: "we are closing 1/2 the north garage for 4 months for repairs"

Really? We have been out of there nearly 1.5 year and they just NOW decide to do repairs, as we start going back?

Interesting.

I wonder if we'll end up more like Japan, where (at the time I visited Tokyo) it was quite common to wear a mask in the office if you were sick with a cold.

My gut-check says in the post-2020 era that would be a mistake--if possible, just stay home if you have cold-like symptoms (until tested)...

Bleh just got worse.

Even tho our manager is asking for 'stuff' to help keep a few at home longer, its going to be denied as this is now the official mandate from the big guy who has unconditional control over *everything*:

Here is how we will return:

  1. Beginning Tuesday, June 7, all agency heads, senior staff and supervisors should be in their pre-pandemic work locations full time
  2. No later than Monday, June 21, all non-supervisory employees should report to their pre-pandemic work locations at least 50 percent of their work week
  3. No later than Tuesday, July 6, all employees should report to their pre-pandemic locations full time

Oh well, was fun while it lasted. Time to start re-training my dogs to be alone during the day.

Donno what is going to happen for the agencies who moved out totally and shut down operations on campus.. Other people have moved in ( to get out of off-campus leases )  they dont have places to go. I guess they have to lease space off-campus. Which isn't budgeted for as budgets for the next 3 years *just* got signed of on..

One of our teams that didnt have room to be with us moved down to our floor, due to another larger team vacating permeability ( they thought ). Now they have to go back where the came from so the others can come back in. So much effort, wasted.

What a freaking mess, 1950s mentality.

Humanity has comfort zones. Trust me, I proved to my boss I could be nearly as effective, and work longer hours and get more done, working from home.

But he just feels like employees need to come into the office.

People revert to old habits quickly.

We all proved it, but when the big guy says jump, you either jump or find another job.

I think hes only got one more term available to him. but by that time it will be time for me to move on anyway.

Basically, you *have* to wear a mask, regardless of the science.

I went in to one of our offices for a week-long series of meetings a few weeks ago. The mask mandate lasted about five hours on the first day, after we all just kind of agreed that nobody cares and we'd rather breathe.

I think things are going to get back to normal quickly. The vibe I am picking up almost everywhere is that people are done with all of it. And when Dr. Fucki announces the third wave this fall, people are largely going to ignore him. Because they were *told* that the vaccine would fix everything, and you can only push people so far.

None of the above has anything to do with actual epidemiology. Because too many people have abused the word "science" to the point where it is now meaningless.

Last week when i was there i was talking to the only 3 people that were there. I had not seen them for over a year so i stopped off to visit. ( Unrelated, Its funny how you can still tell who people are, even with masks. )

Struggling to hear each other to we all looked at each other at the same time sort of shrugged our shoulders and said ' do you care ' and off they went, and then we started talking about how stupid it all is, instead of work stuff.  Even joked about the cameras "they see us, we are gonna get kicked out now".

Those cameras, another story sometime. They appeared right after we lost our cubes."for our safety". ya, right.

The problem is... you're work place is a set for a dystopian Black Mirror episode.

It isn't an employer - it is a labor camp - if they took down your walls and put in cameras so that some guy in a gray room can monitor you for productivity.

And... we *accept* it.

I mean, just read that from outside yourself - and it sounds like a labor camp in some authoritarian dystopian-future regime.

Doesn't mean you "personally" accept it.

The only other option is to find another job, with their own set of draconian rules and monitoring. Its not like you can really get away from it, in practical terms.
