I had a coupon for a free toy (up to $5) because kitty birfday so I used the coupon as five dollars off a "Turbo Treat Ball"
to make the cat work at his treats.... BECAUSE I AM SO MEAN.

http://www.wag.com/cat/p/bergan-turbo-treat-ball-red-817117

I only put three or four treats in a day and I sealed one of the holes so he has to work at getting it out. At least he
does something besides sleep and lick my scalp.

I have this memory of my sister's cat, Grizzy, calmly walking up to me as I was playing with one of the younger cats, taking a few swipes at the feather-on-a-stick toy as if to say, "That's how you do it," then walking away and sleeping.

He was about 13 years old at the time... venerable for a cat.

It was funny... but man, what a great cat. Sorry he isn't around anymore.

Mean, maybe, these toys are recommended by animal welfare experts - and similar devices are used in zoos to keep big cats busy.

Perfect actually - I may get this or something similar. We had been thinking about making one out of a soda bottle but this will make less of a mess, and keep the treats of the floor (which is covered in cat hair, LOL)

I wonder if communities of animals have "human welfare experts" who discuss how they treat us.

Cats have these, but it's the human-torment committee. That's where the 3-belly-rubs rule was agreed on, for instance.

My cat was acting very strange and paranoid last night, he was walking very slowly, looking around every
corner. His eyes were dilated, he was nervous,it was like he thought he saw or heard something. The slightest
noise made him jump and run. I want to know why he was so freaked out. I am sure I have seen this behavior
before.

Does anybodies else's cat get like this?

could be play hunting behavior. ours has running spazz-outs now and then.

No, this is fear of something. He looks around nervously and gets spooked easily. The tail isn't in I am
hunting mode.

+1. I was going to say something about schmoke, but I think zooer was maybe asking a serious question ;)

Catnip paranoia, or just existential blues???

I think my girlfriend's ex-cat, became a lot more fearful in her old age... that's the story, anyway. The cat moved in with the neighbors before it died. Just packed up her toys one day, and said "I like THEM better." So we rely on hearsay. But the cat was rarely seen outdoors, in her later years...

more generally, I don't know, if this behavior is becoming a pattern the cat may be aware of something about its health. is this the same cat that is FIV+

Yes, this is the only cat with FIV, the only cat I have. He isn't doing it today, it was just that one day. It
was like he saw or heard something in the house.

Thanks for the link, I wonder about pain in the joints as sometimes he runs down the stairs and as always jumps
over the bottom stair and on to the floor. I don't know why I find this so funny. Other times he slowly walks
down the stairs taking each step at a time. I can't tell if he is aching or just wants to go slow.

The cat has taken to playing with an eight inch cable tie. Thinks this is fun as hell... for all of 30 seconds,
but it is a couple of times a day.

I've got a fever. (Literally.)

Apparently the only cure is to lie on the floor in front of a box fan. (I write this in one of my more lucid moments, I swear.)

I have constructed a cat-platform next to my crash space, and I am using treats to bribe the feline resident of this house to hang out there. We will see how long this situation maintains. It is getting toward her dinner time.

At some point this week, I will have to speak to my employer.

Ugh. I hope you at least get some interesting dreams from the fever. That's about the only thing I love about them.

Heh, I had read that article this very morning.

I'd sorta love to abuse cats in this fashion.
