Bottom line: in spaces where the monopoly desktop cannot be leveraged, no one wants what Microsoft is selling. All of the spaces where Raspberry Pi is selling like gangbusters -- embedded, hobbyist, maker, mobile, prototyping -- are places where Windows has never been welcome, isn't wanted, and there's no reason to introduce it.

After this thing fails, Microsoft will probably try to slap a $15 bogus-patent royalty on every Pi.

linuxgizmo has a little more to tell about this:

http://linuxgizmos.com/development-board-targets-atom-z3000-tablet-designers/

(i.e. the microsoft page ommits mentioning the android compatibility and that it DOESN'T have a network connection for that price ;-)

That board has all the elegance of a block of Soviet apartments. It *looks* like obsolete Microsoft+Intel hardware desperately trying to be hip and cool.

If it's supposed to be a dedicated development board, it would have made a lot more sense to avoid packing the connectors in so densely like that.
Run 'em all out to the edges so the developers can see what they're doing.

Not that it matters; the intended audience is developers working on a class of products nobody wants.

The banner on the web site said "This site is stuck in 1995, and we are unaware of any advancements in technology. Mobile does not exist. The dynamic web does not exist. We think everyone has a 100 MHz Packard-Bell and a huge CRT monitor."

(Actually it said "requires Internet Explorer" but the above is a correct translation.)

"requires Internet Explorer" ... because we know nothing about web standards.

Because they want to infest your machine with the virus embedded in their ActiveX control, most likely.

I think the airport's website is one of the last IE holdouts. Used to be that most Israeli sites would only work in IE.

Then Israeli websites are trying to infest everyone's machines with ActiveX crap, leaving you exposed to viruses. This doesn't help quell rumors of the Jewish conspiracy, y'know.

So, it seems that Microsoft joined the Khronos group so that it can be part of the WebGL working group. Have they actually seen the light or are they just getting involved so they can bastardize the standards?

If their intentions are genuine then they should show a sign of honesty by axing DirectX and Direct3D, immediately.

I've seen rumblings in Microsoft to suggest that maybe, possibly, they're appreciating the need to follow standards instead of trying to arrogantly dictate them. Maybe.

But it's hard to say. They have a long history of duplicity in these regards.

I guess one has to see how the new boss dictates the way...

The new boss has to make decisions that are beneficial to shareholders. There is a possibility that Nadella and his leadership team will decide that using the Windows platform as a bully pulpit may not be the best strategy in the post-PC era. Or they may decide that Windows still has enough leverage to push with it.

Either way, we will see soon whether Nadella truly wants to run *with* the industry instead of screwing up the whole world with the "Windows Uber Alles" aggression used by Gates and Ballmer.

He wants to significantly change the culture of Microsoft... the old culture, he recognizes, doesn't work anymore.

10k of the 18k were nokians - so I guess this is the poison pill they swallowed during the nokia aquisition. Ballmer probably had some axing in his procastination in that range, maybe more maybe less.

Its the price microsoft paid for becoming a phone manufacturer.

I see that Exchange 2013 now opens the editor inside the main screen when you compose a message, instead of popping out a new window.

Clearly they stole this idea from Citadel and we should sue them for a hundred beeeeelion dollars.

Fucking Microsoft.

They have an outright bug in their WinDNS.h header... one that proves that their fucking TCHAR character type is the stupidest way to deal with characer encoding, since everyone seems to treat it like a char data type instead of its own data type.

If you #define UNICODE, and call DnsQuery_UTF8 according to both the documentation and the header, it will very likely give you garbage, because you'll be working with a datatype that returns a UTF16 string, but the actual data will be UTF8.
If the thing even links properly, or potentially lead to mysterious stack-related problems because of bad arguments.

Fucking Microsoft.

I'll write up the Summons and Complaint for you, IG !!
But first you must send them, certified/RRR, a demand letter with intent to litigate, including your intent to seek punitive and exemplary damages with the option of opening a Litigation Plaintiff(s) Class subsequent to the filing of the initial Complaint.

That way you can file the complaint Pro Se and open the class action later (for which you will need attorney representation).

Geez, the OWA in Exchange 2013 is practically unusable. "Oh, you have 1920x1080 resolution? You must be running on a 10" tablet, so let me set the biggest font size available and not give you the option to change it!"

And of course when you compose a message there's a little button stuck right over your text area that substitutes for the Ctrl key on your tablet. Hey geniuses, I'm not using a tablet. I have a keyboard with *two* Ctrl keys.
Get the damn button out of my way!

So I found myself on a 'doze machine today, and I fired up IE, the program whose only purpose in life is to download a real web browser. I put "google chrome" into the search box, and right along with the download link, Bing put up a big box saying "DID YOU KNOW INTERNET EXPLORER IS FASTER THAN CHROME?
TRY IT NOW!"

Die in a car fire, Microsoft. Instead of IE you should just be including installers for other browsers. You lost the browser war. Give it up.
