Subject: Book Review: FreeBSD Device Drivers by Joseph Kong

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

The Introduction says the goal of the book is “to help you improve your understanding of device drivers under FreeBSD”. OK, that is exactly what I wanted to do as I am currently working on several projects that use FreeBSD at deeper levels of understanding.

Subject: Microsoft Trying to Buy Way Into Consumer Tablet Market

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

When Microsoft made an investment today in the Barnes and Noble Nook, at the very least, the Android tablet market just got a little more entertaining -- and Microsoft got to take on all kinds of demons from Apple to Google to Amazon.com -- an even open source. Certainly great technology theater if nothing else.

Subject: Microsoft, Barnes & Noble Settle Patent Dispute

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

In its signature style Microsoft has settled the patent dispute with Barnes & Noble. The company was losing the legal fight against Barnes & Noble and a court decision certainly was going to trash Microsoft's strategy of ripping Android players over bogus patents.

When Facebook engineers faced a monumental monitoring problem, they went to work on it themselves and developed a custom tool to help them sift through the monstrous data store. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be plans to open source it.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Operating systems are like wine: They hopefully increase in quality as they age, and — unless you’re a Beaujolais nouveau fan — you often don’t want to drink one that hasn’t yet had at least a little time to mature. But the fact that Ubuntu 12.04 was released only days ago isn’t stopping a number of PC vendors from shipping the new release on their hardware already. [url=http://www.thevarguy.com/2012/04/30/ubuntu-12-04-pc-oems-an-overview/]Here’s a look at the status[/url] of Ubuntu 12.04 and OEMs.

Subject: Howto: Unity with Dodge Windows and minimize/unminimize behavior in ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

If you are running ubuntu 12.04(precise) and one thing you might have noticed from your unity is missing Dodge Windows behavior.Another feature users really like is the ability to be able to click a program’s icon on the Launcher and minimize/unminimize that window. Jonathan French (ojno), the developer behind this patch, has not only made this a reality, but also got this to work in conjunction with the ‘Spread Windows’ functionality. He’s even set up a PPA which contains the latest Unity and his patch to make it easier for end-users to get it.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

"It has taken longer than most anyone would have anticipated, but the fact remains that Valve is in fact creating a native Linux port of their Steam game distribution client and of the Source Engine to run natively on Linux," read the announcement on Phoronix on Wednesday. Think gaming is trivial? Think again: In a matter of seconds, the topic was on fire on Slashdot and throughout the Linux blogosphere.

Subject: Microsoft to Take Stake in Nook Unit of Barnes & Noble

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Microsoft announced on Monday that it would invest $300 million in Barnes & Noble’s Nook division for a 17.6 percent stake. The deal values the e-reader business at $1.7 billion. The move by Microsoft will help bolster the standing of Barnes & Noble’s fastest-growing unit. The bookstore giant had said this year that it was exploring strategic options for the business, including a potential divestiture or strategic partnership.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Varnish is an open source “web accelerator” which you can use to speed up your website. It can cache certain static elements, such as images or javascript but you can also use it for other purposes such as Load balancing or some additional security, in general most of the people want to try it and test their website to see if it’s really so amazing (IMO yes, but test it yourself).

Subject: Microsoft and Barnes create new subsidiary

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Microsoft and Barnes & Noble have settled their patent dispute and are forming a new venture to focus on e-reading and the education market. On April 30, the pair announced the formation of NewCo, which will include Barnes & Noble’s digital and college businesses. NewCo will create a Nook e-reading application for Windows 8, as well. Barnes and Noble will own 82.4 percent of the new subsidiary, and Microsoft will make a $300 million investment in the still-to-be-named NewCo and hold a 17.6 stake in the company. (None of Microsoft’s employees will be moving to the new subsidiary, a spokesperson told me.)

Subject: Two Years Fly By: Ubuntu Precise Pangolin Pads Into Production

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Ubuntu's six-month release cycle makes it a bit wearying to maintain the appropriate level of excitement. I use it as a reminder to clean my furnace filters. Anyway it's hard to have drama in a mature product. Improvements are incremental, the new has worn off, and there are a lot more excellent Linux distributions to choose from than when Ubuntu was the new kid. A lot of them are Ubuntu derivatives, and that is how it's supposed to work.
