Subject: Valve's Gabe Newell Talks Linux Steam Client, Source Engine
For those that have doubted the exclusive Phoronix claims for quite a while now that the Steam client and Source Engine are in fact being ported to Linux, the doubts can be nearly laid to rest. Even I began to wonder how long it would take before the clients for their popular games would be publicly released under Linux. However, after confirming the information perhaps a bit too soon, their level of Linux interest is much more clear after spending a day at their offices. A meeting topped off the day with Gabe Newell regarding Linux where he sounded more like a Linux saint than an ex-Microsoft employee. Valve does have some great plans for Linux beyond just shipping the client versions of Steam and their popular games on the Source Engine.

Its is almost tradition at this stage. A rumor surfaces at some point or another during the year, usually around the same time, that Valve are looking to bring their ubiquitous gaming platform to Linux. Usually these rumors are either fizzle out or are flat out denied and a plethora of excuses about poor market share, poor graphics performance and so on are given but when the inevitable (yet slightly late this year) rumor of Steam coming to Linux surfaced earlier today the stage was set slightly differently.

Subject: A RAW Feast on the Linux Darktable (Photo Editor)
The Darktable RAW photo editor and workflow manager for Linux (and experimental support for Mac OS X and Windows) is for non-destructive editing of RAW photo images. It includes common features such as cropping and exposure fixes, manipulation of color and tone channels, and advanced features like a Fujichrome Velvia film plugin (for smoother, more realistic saturation), HDR, and tethered shooting. I put the March 15 release of version 1.0 through the torture chamber, and even though the interface and workflow take some getting used to, it's a powerful editor for serious work.

SPDY (Speedy) is an experiment with protocols for the web. Its goal is to reduce the latency of web pages. mod_spdy is an open-source Apache module which supports the use of SPDY protocol to the Apache HTTPD server. This allows for faster page loading and more efficient bandwidth utilization when loading https URLs in SPDY-enabled browsers.

Maybe this made me less timid with regards to inquiring about the internship, even though I knew it was a long shot; I figured, "I'm in my first semester of college and just finished my first actual project. I'm not ready to contribute to a real startup."

When it comes to Linux distributions, it’s truly different strokes for different folks. Some folks want software that is truly free, meaning that they can do with it as they please. That’s where distros like Trisquel come in. Trisquel is based on Ubuntu, but it provides only free software. You will not find proprietary software included with it.

Subject: Linux for Windows systems administrators: Understand how to execute applications that run on Linux
Sometimes running an application on Linux for the first time requires a little extra work. Some applications such as server services might not be installed as services, so you need to start those applications from the command line. For the user accounts that start the applications, set the execute permission flag (x)on the application files.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.0 has been released today, bringing some important new features, especially for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin which will be released tomorrow. As you probably know, starting with version 0.6, Ubuntu Tweak had lost some of its main features. Well, with the latest 0.7.0, some of these features are back: App Center, Source Center (which is a PPA database that you can easily enable/disable from Ubuntu Tweak), Templates and Scripts.

I have been looking around lately at all the old hardware I have lying around and thought what could I do with it all? Media center? Web server? Hardware Firewall perhaps? Then I came across Untangle Linux Firewall and thought why not give this a try!! Next thought was why install on the old hardware and increase my energy costs when I can install it on Virtualbox on my main Linux server instead? So I have installed Untangle Linux Firewall on Virtualbox running on a Linux Mint 10 File and Print Server and below will outline how I did it.
