Subject: Scribus: Leading, Kerning, and Tracking Text

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

In "Tweaking Text in Scribus," I briefly described the tools available for manipulating text in Scribus. Now, it's time to really get your typographic geek on, and look in greater detail at how to adjust the spacing of text in Scribus: how to adjust the space between lines of text (leading), between characters (kerning), and upon a line (tracking).

Subject: Modded Android: A Space Odyssey

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

When I show friends and colleagues the things I’m able to do on my rooted Android device, many of them end up asking me to work similar magic on their hardware. I’ve always been happy to help out, and after a bit of research at home (how to get root, custom ROMs that are available, etc) I usually come to work a day or two later equipped with my laptop and the appropriate software. Unfortunately, I’ve recently come to realize that this doesn’t always work out to the advantage of the other person, or to me for that matter.

Privacy International, one of the world's leading privacy organizations, last year released the results of a multi-year investigation into the shadowy world of the commercial surveillance industry. Dubbed "Big Brother Inc.," the investigation placed the spotlight on dozens of companies that specialize in covert surveillance technologies that are typically sold directly to governments and law enforcement agencies.

Our first topic of discussion is distribution menageries. Some people, with a drive I confess I cannot even begin to understand, install distributions. And fanboys; people who write window$, M$ (winzort is popular here) and claim that Microsoft is out to conquer the world.

Subject: cPanel: SSL on subdomain howto

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

First, let’s lay out the situation. You have a site named mystore.com. It has a cart so you’ve set it up with SSL. Now, you’re redesigning it and have the subdomain newsite.mystore.com set up under your main account in cPanel for your redesign space. You’ve started your redesign, but you find out quickly that SSL is not set up on this new subdomain and you can’t find a way within cPanel to accomplish this.

According to a report by Canalys, Android apps, when compared to the apps found in the iTunes App Store, are more on the expensive side. The survey was done by comparing the top 100 paid apps from both the marketplaces, and it was found that Android apps cost, on average, 2.5 times more than their iOS counterparts.

Subject: Linux is the world’s fastest growing desktop OS – up 64% in 9 months

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Even the most hardcore Linux fan would admit that their favorite OS has not captured more than a very small market share on personal computers. And that would include us here at Pingdom: all of our engineers and 50% of or our developers are, in fact, running Linux.Ubuntu has enjoyed great success, and more recently Mint, as well. But Linux desktop OS doesn’t seem to be able to break free and climb above the low single digits in market share. But that may be changing if the latest numbers are anything to go by.
