Latest word is that a combination of chloraquine (a malaria drug) and azithromycin (an antibiotic) is proving super-effective in treating the ChinaVirus.

Fuck. I'm allergic to azithromycin.

Yeah, that's based on flimsy evidence so far. Like one flawed study.

I have very little patience for irresponsible public communications, denialism, wishful thinking, or misinformation right now, because, get this:

I contracted COVID-19.

The first hints of symptoms emerged on March 5, and I was certain that I was at least coming down with a cold by March 6. So, I'm on day 18.

Suffice to say that last week, I was the most weak and terrified I have ever been in my life. Even the "moderate" version of this illness will really ruin your day. Nobody wants to catch this. This is the real deal, this is not a drill, and it's not even close to comparable to the flu.

Anyway, I started to solidly recover, then got a positive test on March 19 while it was still possible to get tested, so I'm under quarantine until April 2.

Misinformation is dangerous, folks. Chloraquine/azitromycin is just under investigation at this point, and already:
* A person has died from self-dosing himself without medical advice
* It's flying off the shelves due to off-label prescribing. Actual lupus patients are going to have trouble sourcing any.
* A dentist called in to a pharmacist to prescribe it, probably for his family. Prescribing outside your area of expertise is a no-no. Prescribing for yourself or your family is also a no-no. Unethical at best.

I feel pretty good, but I become aware of of the residual virus in my system when I go to sleep/wake up.

But surely my viral load is way down from where it was at the worst, and I'm eating ravenously, walking around, feeling energetic, doing work for the office, cracking jokes. I've been telling people I'm "fully recovered". I'm almost on week 3, so if I'm not dead by now, it seems I've pulled through.

I never required oxygen (watching that like a hawk from home with a pulse oximeter), so I stayed clear of the ER.

Hi all.

For those of you who know me, and those that don't and don't care... My main area of work for the past almost 20 years has been software to manage the ethical oversight of different sorts of research. Human subjects, animal subjects, radiation safety, bio-safety, etc... We have clients all over the world, universities, hospitals, federal and state governments. I'm far from an expert but I've seen and learned quite a bit. Loanshark is absolutely correct. Anecdotal evidence is useful and requires great amounts of investigation. From what I can see, researchers are doing everything they can to expand clinical use of drugs to help, but at the same time, they need to be ridiculously careful. The NY Times just published an article on Thalidomide which is an unfortunately good example of what can happen when testing isn't done.

Yes, the silly list of possible side effects on commercials is mostly because of legal reasons. Yet, the reason they list all of those things is because you can be certain that someone had those side effects happen to them when taking the drug. Sure .001 percent of people is a very small number of people. Until you're one of the .001 percent.

LS - I hope you have a full recovery and that you all stay safe.

Glad to hear you're mostly on the mend, LS. I agree that no one should be self-prescribing or prescribing outside of their area of expertise. Doctors who know how to use antivirals and antibiotics should be the ones working in this area.

Worse, there seems to be a lot of conflicting news about the efficacy of this particular drug, or set of drugs. One report claims that a doctor who prescribed hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin+zinc achieved a high and speedy recovery rate and zero fatalities. Other reports claim that it's making things worse.

What *does* seem to have been confirmed is that the dude who poisoned himself actually ingested an aquarium cleaning product that contains a form of chloroquine, and was poisoned by the other ingredients.

Meanwhile, out of the 3,277 fatalities reported in China, 21,030,000 of those dead people's cell phone service have been canceled.
Obviously there are could be a lot of explanations, but it is at least hmm-worthy to wonder whether China has been lying about the impact of the virus, possibly by multiple orders of magnitude.

China is a crapbag. You can get your line removed because you critizised the government :) Jokes aside, it is common for people to have multiple lines, for business etc. With the crisis going on, you may expect business to close and business owners to cancel mobile subscriptions.

If you want conspitracy fuel, think about the leaks from chinesse crematoriums that claim that the death toll is way way bigger than the official numbers.

I don't believe a word that China is saying, especially after their recent expulsion of foreign journalists. A country that spans a continent, with the travel patterns out of Wuhan that existed in Dec/Jan, and they expect us to believe there are no new local cases? The numbers on the tracker strain credibility.

They did not need extra facilities and a full lockdown to deal with 4000 deaths.

Did they lose 21 million? Maybe not

I don't think their losses were in the 4 or 5 digits. Maybe 6. More likely 7.

Sooooo... it seems that the "outlier" study which says that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in treating the China Virus came from ... China. Specifically, the government-operated Zhejiang University.

We are way overdue to stop pretending that China is our friend.

China lies. NY has no clue how many they have because they don't have nearly enough tests. Who knows how many Chinese people have died?! and who knows how many New Yorkers can't even get authorized to get tested

Loanshark and my cousin are both fairly certain they have it. If i know two, I bet there are at least another 2-3 people out there who have it.

One of my nieces had her May wedding canceled.  Her state banned all public gatherings of more than 10 until the second week of May.  Her husband and his family are from Washington state.  She was able to reschedule, the event location, everyone involved has been helpful and understanding. They have to be.

Another niece is supposed to give birth next week at a birthing center.  The birthing center is part of the hospital but has a separate entrance and staff.  That has to be unsettling.  She believes things are quiet down there.  Interestingly enough she, her husband and two children came down with a bad cold and flu like symptoms last month.  They all had a low fever for under 24 hours and everyone felt better after two days.

That made me smile.

But, while we're talking about chemical names, and with LS's comments about misinformation:

The other day I received a message from someone (who should have known better) to the effect that if I thought I might have COVID 19, I could kill it by gargling Hydrogen Peroxide!
