yes, it used 'citadel' as the username for the administrator in the setup program. in the openldap directory there is a user record with cn=citadel,dc=my,dc=domain and uid=citadel.

Have you tried using another username for admin? You could rerun the setup with identical settings and provide a different username.

Well, I tried 'admin', 'citadel' and 'administrator' in the setup program, with corresponding users in the openldap dircetory. none of them had aide privileges.

And do they have an additional other entry? Like a description? "Citadel admin account" or something? In this case, the caveat from the howto which you mentioned on your first post might be helping.
I am currently rather busy with fixing lots of systems at clients sites, but I might be able to hook up a test citadel to one of the plain ldap services, at home, I only have samba4 as AD.

But it occurs to me that maybe I can get the best of both worlds. I seem to recall, in the distant past, people who made bridges between email and usenet, allowing people to use widespread email services to interact with newsgroups even if their ISP didn't allow NNTP. Perhaps somebody here knows of a way in which the various messages posted to a Citadel room could be sent to a newsserver daemon on the same machine, such as INN, which would give me the plaintext backups that are the whole point of this project.

The beginnings of a read-only NNTP server are present in Citadel, but I wonder if another feature of the system might be better suited to your need.  We have a message journaling feature [ http://www.citadel.org/doku.php/documentation:journaling ] that was designed with retention and archiving in mind.  This feature was actually commissioned by a customer of a hosting company that was using Citadel and needed to permanently retain all messages on an archive service for compliance purposes.

Subject: Can't set "from address" in mailing list service tab

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm logged in as admin and I'm trying to set the "Which from address should be used:". I select an address from the dropdown list and press select, and nothing is set. All mail sent from that room has a from=room_aide@mailhostname.mydomain.com. I have no idea why it isn't taking the name. Can I set it elsewhere?

Citadel 8.24-7.2

Thanks.

And that's exactly the sort of answer I was hoping for: providing a solution I wouldn't have been able to find on my own in any reasonable length time. :) It looks like my overall problem can now be reduced to "Use Citadel, plus set up an email address for journalling for long-term archiving", which is really less of a 'problem' than it is a 'decide which mail server works the best with Maildir storage'.

If you have any further advice, I'm more than happy to learn.

Or, depending on how much more quickly you can accomplish Citadel-related tasks than I, it might even be worth both our whiles for me to ask if you could assemble an ISO with such fiddly bits already configured, and ready to slide into some Raspberry Pis or VMs to start mirroring with each other. I honestly have no idea how long that might take you; would you be interested in continuing this conversation in private, whether here through Citadel, or email, or some other medium? (And if you have no interest, then I still thank you for everything you've written so far.)

Thank you for your time,

The software you choose for archival depends on the reason for archival.
If it's for compliance purposes, auditors like to see something that at least purports to make the archived messages non-editable and non-deletable once they're committed to the data store. If it's just to have a searchable data warehouse, then pretty much anything will work.

In this case you probably do *not* want the archive server to be a Citadel because you want the archive to be in plain text, plus Citadel is really intended to be a highly interactive service rather than a data warehouse.

Since I have seen others with this issue and no answers.

Make sure to install all the prereqs first.  Not on all the install guides, but this should resolve the issue.

This has been verified as an error in the tarball. Somehow a diff from a different build leaked into git master. Probably my fault.

IT HAS BEEN FIXED -- please try the build again!
