All hell seems to have broken loose in Israel.

Just from the headlines, over 100 rockets hit Israel as it strikes back at Gaza.

*sigh*

yup. we cleared the bed in our bomb shelter and told the kids that if they hear a siren, we go there for a family cuddle to stay safe.

That's what you say when a good person dies.
I get that the meaning seems appropriate, but the connotation isn't.

Not to distract overmuch from that news, but spying on Germany... again?
Unless we find spies from Germany over here, we're not going to enjoy much popularity in that country.

fleeby, most countries are spying on most other countries.  It's just that the good ones don't get caught....and apparently, we're just not very good.

TriL - I'll take that luck; glad you're doing ok.  Do you have backup plans for the kicking out baby party?

Baby comes out on Sunday morning in Petach Tikva.

Hope I won't be running for the bomb shelter while in labor... that could be unpleasant...

yea, it seems pretty famous amongst german politics to find new words to express 'not amused'

I guess one is a bit naive about that here.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

I suspect that the German government wants our government to do something, and is trying to pressure our government to those ends.

I think all governments use spies on each other, and probably know about those spies to some extent, to make use of them as needed (e.g. we probably know of the German spies in this country, but feed them the information we want them to have through non-official channels).

But then, I'm kind of jaded.

Yes. I know. It is the final sung passage in my "Heroes' Requiem" written right after 9-11. An expression of grief, honor and patriotism taken in context of the piece. (http://www.netk2ne.net/9-11/heroesrequiem.html)

The picture is starting to become clearer. I think the Germans would appreciate some kind of answer from our government concerning some of the revelations from Snowden. Publicizing the spies for the US within German applies pressure to do this in a very pointed way.

We continue to say nothing about it... which probably isn't the wisest course of action. But then, I don't tend to view our politicians as 'wise'.

Meanwhile, Indonesian markets rise with the hopes that someone named "Joko Widodo" will win their election for president.

That guy (or gal?) will have a difficult time being taken seriously by English speaking people with that name.

fleeb: The german government rather wants this whole thing to be gone and forgotten. Merkel has no interest in resolving this issue.

Few people have, actually. I guess even those who really care are not enraged enough, because they always expected america to spy on us. It is odd, with all this Gestapo and Stasi history.

Anyway, German politicians think the transatlantic partnership is too important, since we need America to solve the worlds problem. Like Ukraine and the Middle East.
