My wife said at the start that Covid is going to change the workplace forever. Offices are going to realize the cost savings and other benefits with remote workers and that their FEARS about the abuses of WFH roles were exaggerated.

WFH will often create an increase in productivity - because smart workers will put in their own time, when an inspiration hits them, if they can do it from home in their PJs while getting OTHER things done. It is a real Work Life Balance issue.

There has been so much resistance to this in the workplace - but across the board, it increases productivity and decreases costs, overhead, liabilities. It is stupid that the workplace has resisted it so hard until now.

Just the amount of time lost in COMMUTING that WFH offsets is *insane*. Allowing employees to WFH basically gives them an instant raise in reduced fuel costs and allows them to regain their own personal time.

Bosses are idiots.

My manager was dead set against it. he lives in the 50s.  Good guy in most all other ways, but he felt he had to 'be there' with us.  Few years ago he caved to peer pressure, and let us work from home one day a week. Then Covid = full time.  Tho he tried to fight it, met in the middle at 50% in office, but even that never happened due to director level decisions.  Now that we have been gone a year, he realizes we can still do the job.  Several others went thru the same growing pains.  ( some, were all for it at the start )

Some of our 'business units' even turned in their floors late last year, with no intent to come back, ever. No more rent for them. ( tho its sort of funny money, we own the building.. but there is a BU that changes us all per square foot to use the place. That covers AC, heat, water, etc.  If most all left, not sure how that would work.  Might raise the charges as the building HAS to stay and be open. We have public facing BUs. Instead of departments, were independently funded and functioning business units, so its sort of an odd situation. Anyone that was in a remote building that we didnt own that was not 'regional need', was ordered back to save costs ( we lost 20% of our budget last year across the board due to the virus ). And since some left to go home, there was room for them now.

We still have some micromanagers who have their people there and only let them go home when it was *mandated*.  So they can sit and stare at them all day. Right down to the second. "person x just got off a call, they were on it for 12.3 seconds".  I would refuse to work for a person like that.

And yes i totally agree. aside from more abstract benefits like reduced stress and increased happiness ( for most.. some struggle at home all alone ), you get back time in your day for not having to commute, or deal with lunch. Travel saved me 2+ hours a day..Lunch now is walking the dogs to the park, not hiding somewhere at the office to eat and not be bothered. I still drive around my side of town for food and stuff and other things when needed, but i dont think i put 1k miles on my car since shut down.  I go weeks before i buy gas now. And i normally drive a jeep, which is not known for MPG.  Clothing, while we went causal some time ago, i'm sure helps a lot of other people that had to be more formal at the office.  Not worn a watch in a year..  Earbud batteries, dead as door nail :).

About the only thing i miss out on is that i used to walk to/from my desk start/end of day, and after lunch, and often one break. 10th floor.  No elevator unless i was running late. Walking the dogs does not replace that level of exercise.

Would be really nice to ride out the next 5 years or so i have left,
at home.  Going into the office every day just to sit behind a
monitor is overrated for many of us. Greatly overrated.

I've got mixed feelings about that. I don't miss my daily commute; it was expensive and time consuming. I do miss the proximity to NYC bars and restaurants. I also don't miss the proximity to bars and restaurants; too easy to drink overpriced alcohol to excess.

Being home all the time is a bit of a downer.

Ultimately it doesn't matter what I think: the CEO has made it clear that at some point, things will go back to normal, and at that point, he will no longer be interested in being a work-from-home shop.

I'm not a fan of cites, never have been, so staying down in the suburbs is fine for me. ( that said id still rather move further out of town again. I prefer to be able to be able to set off a small tactical nuclear device and no one notice. The city is quickly encroaching here, time to stay is limited. )

For us we are not "stuck at home", we can go eat, visit the park, go to the grocery, the local rural king, see friends. etc.    Pretty much everything i did before the lock down is still availble.  ( YMMV of course. While they did go overboard here, they didnt totally freak out like some states. They even encouraged people get outside and supported trips to local state parks, even dropped fees for a while. )

I'm not stuck at home, but I *feel* stuck at home. In the winters, I usually ski. Most of the decent ski areas now have an annoying advance reservation system, because of covid, and I haven't wanted to deal with that. My preference would have been to do some backcountry ski touring. But then I broke my 5th metatarsal, and the first ski tour I attempted, the boots were killing me. I had to dig an old pair of boots out of my attic. They're crappy when it comes to downhill performance, but they fit more comfortably; unfortunately, these things seem to go a bit hand-in-hand.

It's been a month since my really ill-fated backcountry tour, the one where I was in an agony of pain and cursing up a storm by the time we got back to the car. My foot might have improved enough to try the better boots again. It's hard to know for sure.

So I've just been feeling kinda uninspired and unmotivated to get out, lately.

Back on topic, you touched on one of my number one pet-peeves: the closure of outdoor areas has been a bad policy move by a number of local governments. Just to pick one example near Uncensoredland, the outdoor charcoal grilles at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation were taped off with police tape last time I checked. This is just dumb policy, and forces people into riskier indoor socializing. Enough with the beach-shaming and faux-crowded photos shot with weird focal length lenses, too.

They did close off playgrounds inside city parks, but not the park itsself.  Not real sure about camping or not, i haven't done that in decades so didnt pay attention.

In the old days, before everyone and their uncle got on the net i went by Ziggy.  ( even pre net )

Problem was as people flooded the webs, that name was EVERYWHERE since it was common, so i dropped it before someone gave me a bad name.

I think I might remember. Pre-1996, dialing in from out of town?

I dont remember the dates, but i do remember dial in. But i know i made an appearance a few times after the move to the net too.  Then a LONG hiatus...

Back in dial-up days, i ran the area here and could make or break a board just from a 1/2 assed comment.  "The Village" was mine.   ( I am huge fan of the show, one of my earliest memories is of Rover. )

August 1996 was when we first appeared on the Internet, so that's probably the time frame. In any case I am thrilled that you made it back and are here to stay. :)

As much as i'm not a fan of crowds, i sort of miss the BBS parties back in the late 80s  early 90s   ( one wife came from a BBS, in effect its how we met, she lived at the house where one of my competing boards was at  )

Early days of iRC ( before it went mainstream ) used to have local parties too.   Last one we had was great, until the cops came and shut it down around 1am :)   After that, the guy who hosted them, got ran out of town and we sort of stopped having them. Met the current wife that way.

Man. Between this and talking about retirement targets with a guy from the office today, i feel old.

Took the day off to hang with my dogs at the park. Not so bad today :)

My guess is another 5 years to retirement. They do age+service to get your 'date' for full.  But, i wont qualify for medicare/caid yet ( i always forget which is which... )  and we dont get medical insurance as part of our package anymore, unless you are an elected official. ( as always, they vote their pwn perks, and piss on the rest of us..  Hell, even their extended family gets it, for life. )

I turn 51 today.

I knew a Ziggy. You're not a 916 Citadel user are you - I did recommend Uncensored to a group of 916 fossils. They never listen to me - and I didn't know the Ziggy very well...

Which may mean it would be more likely you would listen to me, if you were he.

I took the following day off, so I stayed up until 3 AM drinking low carb beer by myself until I finally felt a LITTLE drunk, then went and passed out.

Woke up the next morning and honestly, probably could have gone into work. :)
