The fail often thing is important, I think. But it's also wise to learn how to fail in ways that have the least impact on others. That latter bit is the hard part, sometimes.
I haven't seen the video yet (currently at work). But I suspect it's pretty much what I do. I build tests and whatnot to poke around at things, expecting stuff to fail so I can figure something out from it.
And then there's this stuff I'm doing with Linux... hoo-boy, but is this chock full of failure for me. I kinda feel like I'm cramming as much failure into my forays into Linux as possible.
I'm am becoming convinced that someone is running a psychological experiment here to see who will break first.
This high-pitched, irritating, occasionally pausing sound could perhaps induce one to murder. I'm not sure. I think that's what they're trying to find out.
A consultant I know would occasionally defuse a heated bout of things getting out of hand by stopping everything and say that he had to go to the bathroom. Kinda like kindergarten, but it helped him remove himself from the situation and give everyone time to think. Not that it is the answer to everything, but I have used it to keep from "going off" on some folks. It seems these days that most employers will deny you quiet, space, the ability to eat food, or the ability to deviate from a plan, but most won't deny you a potty break :-)
Well, this occasional noise they have here doesn't follow one to the bathroom, so it might work... but the noise will be there when I return, so such measures are temporary, at best.
Hope you can find solace wherever you can in any case. That has become my best escape as of late. Walk around the building and escape for a few minutes, or just go to a place where nobody else is for a bit to think and re-charge. I miss solitude as society seems to hate it now.
So yes, the escape by going to an unoccupied location is a big deal. Sometimes sitting in an unoccupied conference room or even a storage area might be just what you need.

I'm not entirely certain I even want to go as far as an in-person interview.
Their corporate culture seems to value eating their young and replacing people pour encourager les autres. I've spent the last decade learning how to build teams and develop people to where I need them to be. I'm not sure w e will mesh.
The manager I'm talking to (whom I knew in uniform from a few years ago) is trying to pitch it as "refreshingly non-government" and that the perception is mostly just people butt-hurt because there isn't a lot of hand-holding.
We shall see.

Attachmate is based out of that general area. I stopped working for Attachmate when I quit WinINSTALL.
As for Seattle, I'm convinced that Microsoft Exchange was built by the same people who built the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

We lost two people who had been here a while last Friday, and today we lost another person (although I get the impression this last person was fired rather than electing to leave).
The person who was fired had embarked on a political turf battle a few months ago that the person won. Maybe.
And so, it feels weird today.
Well fleeb, if you were still working for Attachmate you'd be involved in yet another dinosaurs-mating activity today. It seems that Micro Focus, the company that maintains cutting-edge technology such as "Visual COBOL," is acquiring Attachmate.
It seems that there are people out there trying to build empires out of obsolete products.
Heh... Attachmate sold WinINSTALL off to Scalable (which is kind of a child company of theirs anyway).
I'm guessing WinINSTALL is something of a relic anyway. That said, they hired one or two new developers recently, so it's possible there's some kind of resurgence or something. Dunno. Not sure I care, either, as I don't have much use for that anymore.
oh, attachmate? Novell & SuSE? thank gads the first thing they did was to fire the see-carpet brats that Iggy likes so much...

Heh, in the case of WinINSTALL, they fired all but about two developers from that project. I think many of us saw the handwriting on the wall, though, because they made it clear they didn't value us.
And, honestly, in retrospect, they did the right thing. We had far too many people working on that project for its income.
