I have mentioned this before, whenever the newspaper/media ran a story about a black man that killed in a drive-by shooting or gang violence the media said three things:
1) They were liked by everyone.
2) They were trying to turn their life around.
3) They were an aspiring rap artist.
EVERY time.
I'm waiting for the guy who was dressed in dark, hip hop fashion, in an area where cars were being reported broken into, and then ran from the cops, hid in the shadows, and came out suddenly holding some object in his hand pointed toward the cop - and gets shot...
And turns out to have just completed his bar exam, or got his dentistry license, or was just about to start his job as a lead design engineer at Boeing or Intel.
Despite the popular narrative that this fear exists for ALL young black men and that they're all aware they could be next.
It is never the guy I just described who ends up on the evening news.
And it isn't because the guy I just described doesn't exist.
I've worked with guys like this - and they do generally insist that profiling exists and there is a presumption of guilt based on skin color in this country.
But they also tend to admit if you're not up to shady shit, in MOST of the country - you're not going to get murdered by cop JUST for being black. You've got to fail a few other critical tests before you get to the murdered/beaten by cop stage.
Frankly - I think that pretty much applies regardless of skin color. If you fail a couple of critical checkpoints when having an unfortunate interaction with the police where YOU are their suspect - you can quickly go from "This is a real inconvenience" to "shots fired, send an ambulance."

Mon Apr 26 2021 09:58:54 AM EDT from IGnatius T FoobarSome are now calling it "the white scare"
Meaning that there is persecution of whites today on the level of the witch-hunt hysteria of the Red Scare/McCarthyism?
I'd agree with calling it that, in that context - except - it turns out the Red Scare maybe wasn't such a SCARE, after all... The SCARE in that was in buying into that the Red Scare *was* just a witch hunt and mass hysteria.
Mon Apr 26 2021 09:58:54 EDT from IGnatius T FoobarSome are now calling it "the white scare"
As recently as early 2020 I accepted the doctrine that the Red Scare was a mass hysteria event akin to Japanese internment and the Salem Witch Trials.
But by November 2020, I was reading descriptions of the Red Scare on History.com and going... "wait... that IS exactly what happened!"
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/red-scare-dominates-american-politics
"In the first story, the Republican-dominated Senate Internal Security Subcommittee released a report charging that the Radio Writers Guild was dominated by a small number of communists. The Guild, whose members were responsible for producing more than 90 percent of the programs on radio, had purportedly been run by a small clique of communists for at least the last nine years. According to the subcommittee report, communist subversion of the Guild was merely one step in a larger effort to control the media of the United States—including radio, television, movies, and book publishing. "
So, then... yes... that is EXACTLY what it appears they did.
Wed Apr 28 2021 13:45:29 EDT from IGnatius T FoobarAgreed, and yes the comparison of the Red Scare to the White Scare does imply that both threats are/were legitimate. In retrospect we know that Joe McCarthy was absolutely correct.
Joe Biden headquartered his campaign here, which should tell you everything about the people around me.
I think that old joke about "if you are young and a conservative you have no heart" but "if you are old and a liberal you have no brain" still applies. Sure, its not 100% true in reality, but it does express sentiments of many in general.
I think it boils down to life experience. Idealistic wide eyed children are easily fooled and manipulated. But as one gets older, you ( hopefully ) begin to see reality for what it is, and then realize how flawed and self-serving liberalism actually is.
Wed May 05 2021 01:57:38 AM EDT from ASCII ExpressI know. I used to think, "Oh those cranky old conservatives." Now I think, "How did those old guys know?"

My Nephew, who used to argue with me about voting for Clinton, the first time... along with all my then 20-something friends...
Now repeats this quote and goes, "it used to piss me off when you said this to us when we were kids, and now I think about how right you were every time I have a reason to think this."

I've thought of this quote many times as well.
About twenty years ago the Onion had a list of notes for first time homeowners.
One of the points was about your political beliefs taking a sharp turn to the right.
It isn't untrue.

It is a quote that is usually attributed to Churchill. Fact-checkers generally reject that Churchill said this, but it is plausible.
Dumbass me left a bag at the grocery yesterday apparently.
Wasn't able to find an item last night. Figured it was me and i just misplaced it by accident. Then today, i cant find another. Receipt is long gone.

Go back to the store and say you left a bag. Maybe they found it and put it aside.
For a bottle of booze, I'd go back and give it a shot.

1: Call Microsoft Enterprise Licensing Support
2: Go back to Giant Eagle and find the missing bag of groceries
