Not watching news, i had not heard that. Good for him.

As far as warmth, yes, dead tree can keep you warm. But if you dont

have an entire winters supply, it may be hard to get more when there

is no fuel for the truck.. I'm going to buy a cast iron wood stove

next week, for plan D. Too bad i cant use that 300 gallons or so of

heating oil stored here.   grumble.

I have about 4 whole years of dead tree supply, not counting the burnable pieces of broken furniture I keep specifically for burning. Broken furniture alone is worth a couple of months.

I have regular chimneys. I would have liked to add some wood stove to my house but I faced hard opposition by family back then. I have some spare traditional braziers for indoor use but I'd rather not use them unless totally necessary, because they are a bit dangerous IMO.

My bread and butter for heating is an oil boiler, and the direct fallback plan is electrical heating since we have a massive surpluss of locally generated electrical power. I am not heating the whole house on that but I certainly can heat a few rooms, so I can close half the house if need be and live in the others. Dead wood is the emergency plan for when the others fail, but I still like to test it every once in a while. I want to know I can cook a stew in the chimney before I must find out the hard way :)

Don't blame me, I voted for Trump.

Yep, voted for him also, despite being a libertarian. How anyone could look at Bidens history and vote for him with a strait face is beyond me.

Big Orange ended up governing as a quite excellent libertarian.

That's one of the reason the BushClintons hated him so much.

He acted about like i expected in most ways, however i didnt expect him to underestimate the enemy...  But it was his first time in 'real' politics, not the silly city level stuff to get his buildings built.

Except for the part about banning bump stocks. I'm not even a bump stock fan boi, but I am a gun rights activist. Even was in the Borat 2 movie off screen, you can hear me, because the idiot invaded our gun rights rally in Olympia, WA, that was started by a Filipino immigrant ex-marine, friend of mine. I even have pictures of me handing off my bull horn to my friends kid wearing an Israeli flag as we rush the stage. Sasha had armed security blocking the stairs, the parts he doesn't show.

True, you can also make methanol with a gasifier so you don't need to hook it directly to a combustion engine. I'd build a gasifier, and have a sterling engine running off the excess heat from it, while producing methanol.

Trump's problem is that he doesn't have these foundational values. I think he has opinions about things that matter to him that are driven by "means to an end" and not by philosophy, and some of those things just happened to align with the modern American right. Without the fundamental values driving his opinions, it's hard to tell which way he'll blow on a particular topic. I think he was easily influenced by people he surrounded himself with, which is why in the beginning I was optimistic when it looked like he was surrounding himself with people who would whisper the right opinions into his ear. But we all know how long that lasted.

To be fair, at that level you HAVE to have trusted advisors around you.  No way one many can do, or even understand, it all on their own.

And of course the bad actors tossed in, makes it that much worse.

Great video on why this wouldn't be as good as say something like Methanol. Has to do with storage, and not being able to store Hydrogen as a liquid at room temperature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IPR50-soNA

Sure, of course. And in some ways it has its benefits, too. A politician that can be influenced by his constituents is a good thing. They supposedly work for us, after all. The Democrats have the opposite problem. Their elected servants prefer to be called "leaders", and they are idealogues who tell their constituents how they should feel about things.

It's not the worst thing in the world for Trump to lean on advisors. It's just that without having driving philosophical values about subjects like 2A, he has no compass. It's like sometimes he'd blurt out stuff, and then someone would have to pull him aside and whisper "sir, Republican voters actually stand this way on the issue." Oh, oops, what I meant to say was...

Anyway, I shouldn't have to say it but of course I'd still take Trump, unconstitutional bump stock ban and all, a gazillion times over any filthy gutter scum the Democrats have to offer.

Oh, i'm not saying its optimum, but when everything collapses around us you dont need much to do it, and its just to get by. All it takes is basically water and solar, and most of us older kids in the US did it at least once for fun.

Back in the 70s when i saw it done in person on cars they were using propane tanks with some sort of material inside to absorb and release it ( mostly safely )

Not that i'm interested in watching, but i ( and some others ) have noticed a lack of election night coverage, like it normally would be. Sure, spots here and there i guess, but not everywhere like usual. I expected at least a bunch of stuff like "the tide is turning even more blue, we are going to beat the evil maga-bla blas into the dirt"

just seems strange to me.

To be honest, when I was politically active I found that happening so much.

Here is the thing: there are issues that some people find non-resolvable or they just don't care about them. If somebody is in a political party, the safe play is to support the party line when they ask you about an issue you don't give a damn about or for which you know no solution you trust, but I suspect Trump is not the sort of person who fills the blanks with the party line.

I used to have a similar problem regarding abortion policies in the parties I collaborated with. I understand both side's arguments but I don't like the approaches each side takes, so if I was at an event representing some group and they asked me about those issues, I'd say " The Party's position is X for this and that reason," which is both true and does not compromise my values. Once, somebody asked me "Ok, but what is YOUR position," and my answer was "I don't care myself, but contributors want X and I will defend their interests because that is what we get their support for."

Many people has this idea that if you don't sit on a given camp regarding some issues you are a political corpse. They think if you don't support a given position regarding abortion policies, nobody will vote for you. That is only right if you apply for positions where those issues may come into play, IMO. Nobody is gonna care much for your ideas about worldwide nuclear disarment if you are applying for a seat in the Town Hall of some small town in the desert.
