In another instance of "you get what you pay for" (but sometimes not even that)

The free version of Outlook web mail now has more ads -- and Microsoft is making them look like emails.

Really, the only difference between these ads and outright spam is that the ad is randomly inserted into your inbox at runtime instead of being stored in your inbox as an actual message. Aside from that, it looks, acts, and reads exactly like spam.

The message from Microsoft is clear: spam is ok as long as THEY are the ones doing it.

Spam you cant stop..  Neat.

I'm still glad my professional days are nearing the end, and i wont ever have to see another windows machine ever again and to be honest, i hate what the 'it field' has become. ( even if i were to strike back out on my own in retirement, i would get to choose.. )

I pushed the reply button and now I feel some obligation to say something, but my brain is just completely blank.
Teams as phone is stupidity on another level. Especially without some easily accessed alternative.

zero alternative

only consolation is you can forward incoming to a real phone but no way to call FROM my office number without teams

Yeah. M$ can be your phone provider, or if you have an existing phone system they have a way you can tie it in.

${EMPLOYER} uses Teams but I think they just went with it because we use O365 and it comes with it. No one actually "likes" it. We're also paying for WebEx *and* Cisco Call Manager for our phones. It's pretty dumb that we're spending all this money for the same thing. Oh, and I get a phone expense for my cell, which is on top of all the other stuff.

I think Cisco is working on adding Call Manager support to the WebEx client, so at least we'll have a single client for both WebEx and our internal phone system. They're probably doing that to stay competitive with Microsoft. <shrug>

I don't care much, really. I've gotten to a point where 100% of my communication is either internal or part of a WebEx/Teams/Zoom meeting if it's partially external. When my phone does ring it is almost always some lowlife calling from a scam center overseas trying to sell me an auto warranty or solar panels. Most of the time I don't even bother starting up the client.

And of course I turned off the voice mail a long time ago.

We used to pay for webx, but that was stopped when teams was adopted and you cant use it now even if its free. Zoom client is hard to get permission to install.

I hear that once we have 100% roll out of teams phone for regular folk, ( 30k users ) jabber gets uninstalled automatically and we drop our current VoIP provider. Unsure about the call centers.  We have several BUs using something, tho i forget the name. Donno if that continues or they move to teams too.

When they switched my BU, the next day telecom crew went desk to desk looking for physical, phones to repossess. Mine was long gone, i was part of the pilot group for jabber years ago and gave up my device as it was dead weight to me, but they had no records of who still had one.  lol.

I have to assume this is starting to become part of tstandard corporate culture -- I never get a Teams "call" unless the person has already asked me via instant message if I have time to talk. I like it. I like it a lot.

Meetings are another story...

That is all people have been doing at my place for 3 years now.  And get pissed when you dont answer. Normally i ignore them unless i'm expecting it. Just like with a real phone :)

End of support has been announced for Exchange 2013. I was disappointed; I initially thought they were ending support for on-prem Exchange in general.

Office 365: the software so awful that they have to run it for you.

In our case, moving to Microsoft cloud ( AD, exchange, etc ) doubled our local support staff, and increased the license fees.

Meanwhile ... [ https://tinyurl.com/2evcfyod ] ... the US Army is reporting that they were asked by Microsoft to test the latest batch of HoloLens VR headsets to be used as a heads-up display for "integrated visual augmentation" in the battlefield.

More than 80% of the soldiers who tested them reported feeling nauseous, getting headaches, or suffering eyestrain.

According to one soldier, "the devices would have gotten us killed" had they been deployed in a real battlefield.

Maybe the dumbfucks in the government should have figured that out *before* they gave Microsoft $22,000,000,000 to build the damn things.

Fucking hell. I have a desk full of audio hardware and nothing wants to work on Windows this week.

The company-issued Senneiser headset - comes online, plays system sounds, doesn't work on Teams even if I select it.

My Corsair gaming headset - lowers the mic so far down that I can't be heard no matter what I adjust.

Bluetooth headset - yeah, good luck with that.

I ended up taking a call today using the speakers and my studio mic.

Oh, did I mention that ALL THESE DEVICES WORK 100% PERFECTLY ON LINUX
