I've got a backup of mine on 5.25" floppies. I *should* take the time to recover it and figure out how to run it as a door off of the actual Citadel... get it running in some web-based Dosbox.
I bet that is actually something that is do-able.
Tue May 04 2021 21:29:04 EDT from Nurb432It would be a restart, i have no history to transfer over. Sort of a phoenix, rising from ashes of days gone past.
hell i dont even remember 90% of the platforms i used as it morphed so much over the years, let alone saved any of it.
Tue May 04 2021 08:20:35 PM EDT from ParanoidDelusionsPut it up. There is no better time than now. I'd love to add another Citadel to the rotation.
Try my new Citadel at disboardia.net. You can access it via the web, telnet, or ssh to bbs@disboardia.net, password bbs.
Let's keep the vibe going!
👍
I think there are a lot of the users here on Uncensored who would like the tone and atmosphere of your BBS, ASCII-X.
Wed May 05 2021 01:18:41 EDT from ASCII ExpressI can't post in the Other Citadels room, so thought I'd post here.

ok ok .. i started the process to bring The Village back to life.. I at least allocated drive space :)
LOL
So i have it installed and running. Not really setup yet. Just running ( DNS is setup, need to get a reverse proxy setup again so i dont kill guacamole, or move to a non-standard port )
This morning I was i was thinking 'where are all the rooms'. Kept hitting refresh. *finally* noticed the icon was different. Doh! i was on mine, not here.. I should go back to bed.
👍
I'm stoked to see us going from just one Citadel remaining for public BBS roles, to two, to 5 of them over just a couple of years.

I did a bunch of test changes on my test VM yesterday...
Made SURE to verify it was the test VM. Thought consciously about not mistaking production for test before I started.
Then looked up at the title bar, and I was making all the test changes on production - and had painted myself into a pretty bad corner.
Downtime ensued - things are working better now than they have been since I migrated to VM from bare metal... and, I always could have just recovered...
But... it was sketchy, none-the-less.

still working out my reverse proxy here. I had totally forgot how i managed to get tiny proxy to redirect to servers and not just paths ( i pulled it off, somehow just can not remember how i did it..arrgh.. ) and my first attempt at it and another solution failed miserably. Not that i cant just run it on an odd port, but id like to do it on 80 ( then change to ssl on 443 )
I may or may not enable internet mail. I'm leaning towards no at this point. "yet another email account" everyone has one...
Offering e-mail to the public seems like a bad idea, to me. I might consider enabling it for a few choice accounts of people I really trust - but as you point out, they don't get anything real tangible out of having a @wallofhate.com account.
And in the meantime - it seems like just chumming the waters for the bottom feeders who would love to abuse an SMTP server - not to mention other things the people who dislike you on the Internet might get up to with it - just to cause you headaches.

I chose to disable internet email for regular users because it seemed like something that a user could abuse, or use to get me in trouble. I do allow IMAP and POP3 access though. I expect to have a number of users using screen readers and other assistive technology, so the more ways they can access the rooms and chat the better.
Hmnnn. That is a pretty cool approach, I hadn't considered.
Although I'll be honest - using external clients seems to create a lot of the support issues I see. It absolutely adds a level of complexity to administering *and* using Citadel.

I will leave internal mail going of course, and not cut off external clients.. Just the internet side, most likely not. The rewards are just not worth the hassle/risk i dont think. Not in 2021.
My internal mail seems broken. I'm OK with that. I have not made much of an effort to figure out what I've done wrong.

Sun May 23 2021 07:46:51 PM EDT from zooerWhat a nice quiet weekend....
I went to Mexico. Got food poisoning - and spent the last two days doing what tourists do in Mexico.
Surprisingly, it was not Mexico's fault. We brought Cold Cut Cheese Rollups from CostCo that tried to kill my wife, my buddy, and myself. His wife escaped with no ill effects, as she chose not to eat any of that.
The drive home was a sketchy trip.
