Yeah.  It's a laptop computer so for now I've moved it (and its docking station) to the middle of the desk and am using its built in keyboard.  I like the extra amount of desk space that is freed up but I'm not sure I can get used to having the big monitor off to one side.

I bought a Unicomp when the trackpoint buttons stopped working on my model M. It barely lasted 2 years, and now it randomly decides chunks of the keyboard don't work. Very disappointed.

That's not encouraging. I bought a Unicomp recently.

I'll go right back to Matias when this one goes.

Anyone know how to fix a Model M? The space bar on my best one stopped registering.

If you feel comfortable opening it up, it's likely dust or dirt in between the membrane sheets or a broken/corroded trace... which can be fixed with a trace pen. Model Ms are infinitely repairable.

Hmm. That does sound feasible. The thing is, I removed the keycap and spring, and if I touch the hammer underneath with the tip of a small screwdriver, the key registers. So I might just have to reassemble it properly? I've read something about "Sandy's Chopstick Method" which I don't quite understand.

*sigh*

This crappy non-mechanical keyboard I'm on right now is a distinct non-pleasure to type on. But it fits in the tray under my desk, which my M didn't.

You need a larger tray.

I'm a larger Trey, but I won't fit under your desk.

Entertained at the thought of IG finding fleeb under his desk..

If he clicks when I jab him with my fingers, he's got the job.

Found another M in the basement and cleaned it up. It's at my main workstation now. I still may give a modern clicky-keyboard a try though.

It's nice to hear that mechanical keyboards are increasing in popularity.
It also says that if I want a Das Keyboard then I'd better get one before Cherry starts having some of their switches built in communist china to keep up with demand.

If you have gobs of money, you could get a unicomp:

Or just pay a measly $400 for a vintage one:

Don't get the Unicomp. I bought one. It's okay at best.

The keyboard I've got my eye on is the Das Keyboard 4 Professional. It has Cherry MX Blue switches and seems to be well regarded by the clicky keyboard using community. Kind of settling on that one at this point. I'll still have my Model M.

Hm, I should perhaps get one of those Das Keyboards for work.

Not only does it feel better, but the absurdly loud sounds it generates would annoy everyone around me at the office enough to encourage them to put me somewhere far away from them.

(unlike any of the many other annoying things that haven't quite had that effect yet).

Well, they do offer the same keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches, which have the same tactile response as the blues but a quieter click. But if the objective is to be loud and annoying -- which I endorse wholeheartedly -- then get the blues!

I guess I wasn't paying attention when HP split itself up into "HP Inc" (personal computers and printers) and "Hewlett Packard Enterprise" (servers, software, storage etc)

"Hewlett Packard Enterprise" is such a 20th century name. We don't use names that make sense in this business anymore. They should change it to something trendy and brandtastic. I suggest "Schnooblaxguh"
