Google play music has been shut down and moved to whatever it is now.

Somewhere on here I wondered why my Google Play Music was  "syncing" without any music in my library.

It is now Youtube Play music - which I have a feeling is eventually going to be more expensive than Google Play music ever had a chance of being and part of ABC Company's new, "We're going to be a little evil," policy.

YouTube Music seems to be just a music-focused UI (and app) that curates the existing music videos on YouTube, which presumably are all aligned to their rights holders at this point. This is perfect for those of us who won't pay and know how to block the ads when watching without paying.

Spotify could be in trouble, though.

It is something more than that, though - because I uploaded my tracks, and there are ways I know they're my tracks...

And it is playing my specific tracks. Not just the audio from a video that is already posted, or a single music file.

It plays my specific music.

More of Google seeming to misbehave:

So, now that the BBS has been up with a static IP address - it is
starting to get crawled by the search engines. Interestingly, it doesn't actually show on Google... only sites that link to it have been crawled. DuckDuckGo, though, puts it at the top of their search results, where it belongs.

Google is onboard with the censorship that Twitter, Facebook, and the other Tech giants in silicon valley are engaged in - and because Facebook and Twitter believe my site is a right wing extremist site, Google does too.

They do not like the Democracy of the Web - because it is potential competition for them.

To me this is the clearest evidence I've seen yet that Google filters their search results to lead you to only the information they want you to see. That is unethical and dangerous. If you haven't switched yet, do so now. Google isn't the best search engine anymore.

The question is which other search engine you are going to use, since lots of the cool ones are actualyl metasearches that use Google as their source.

I don't think using Google as the source is necessarily a problem, if they disrupt the algorithms that Google individualizes.

Google didn't get to the top by using a shitty search algorithm - but they may get replaced because they are abusing that algorithm to deliver their agenda.

The Internet isn't the only thing that routes around damage to deliver the intended result. Human knowledge is the original search algorithm and I still believe that information wants to be free.

Maybe, but I am skeptickal.

If google uses non-individualized filters for something and you use a search engine who sources its results from google, you'll be subjected to the same filters.

This is what makes finding certain sites online very hard. Try locating a website that does something _very_ illegal and you'll get what I am saying. It is not that the sites are unlocatable as much as you are unlikely to find them using regular search engines.

My understanding is that the bias filter works by tailoring search results to the tracking of your account. You can verify this by doing a search logged in, and then logged out of Google. You'll get different results - the logged in ones "tailored" to your preferences.

Now... they can still bury a site like my BBS because they don't like the URL... but here is the thing - I don't think most of these search engines solely source Google. They're usually sourcing all of the search engines - and if they're there, and they're privacy minded, and they're "liberty of information" minded - eventually they're bound to notice if sites are being buried by all of the major search engines they're sourcing.

Having a place like DuckDuckGo there is a start, and absolutely better than nothing.

Speaking of which, I have recently heard Youtube got some scientific/conspiracy debunker show cancelled because they examined the voter fraud claims in the US.

I think the obvious answer is to move your videos out of Youtube but then, Youtube has gotten so powerful you could say it is the only platform people visits.

Lots of musicians are also stressed by the fact if they are not in Amazon and Apple they are not going to get out.

Sucks.

Even a long-time Internet institution like Fastmail requires you to have an account on El Goog or Apple in order to download their mobile app. They don't host it themselves, they outsource that critical part of their infrastructure. Shameful shit.

Youtube needed to die in a fire long ago. After their latest bullshit, everyone who works there needs to be dragged from the building, tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail. Then burn the building to the ground, and salt the earth. "We will start removing any piece of content uploaded today (or anytime after) that misleads people by alleging that widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election". Good to know they have all the facts and the science is settled.

Nasim Aghdam already tried that, she killed three youtube employees.

I think this is the heart of the problem - but this isn't really a Youtube or Google issue - it is an Idiocracy issue.

The general lack of traffic to sites like Uncensored and The Sanitarium speaks to this... and it is the same phenomenon that drives mom and pops out of business as Amazon and WalMart dominate retail edge-to-edge.

People like the comfort of uniformity - and mistake the mediocre for consistency. There is a certain economy of scale - In-N-Out is going to be very reliable - where your regional franchise fast food place that leaves a lot of decisions up to the individual franchise owner may be hit and miss from one location to the other.

Amazon has a weird model - in that there are different levels of fulfillment - from no-hassle, no questions asked, get-it-today and drop-it-off-at-Kohl's if you don't like it Amazon prime orders to "merchant-reseller fulfilled" orders that show up in a USPS bulk rate envelope and it costs more to send back for a refund than the refund is worth stuff from China.

Consumers don't understand this - but generally, it ends up hurting the small merchants more than it hurts Amazon, I think... because of the root issue - the Idiocracy.

The problem really isn't these things - it is US as a collective.

Null of Kiwifarms went to great lengths to keep from being silenced over the years, more than almost anyone else:

https://kiwifarms.net/threads/where-the-sidewalk-ends-an-internet-story.58353/

"In response, I have acquired my own ASN. This 'Autonomous System Number' is the very edge of the Internet and it directs routing tables and IP assignments. By having an ASN, I am as close to the beating heart of the web as anyone can be. Why does a random insane person sit at the table now? Because motherfuckers forced me to. Everything I've done, everything I've learned, has been because motherfuckers forced me to do it. This site would be sitting on a $100/mo VPS, and I'd probably be bored of it by now, if people had just left it alone."

But now he's talking about shutting down if section 230 goes away. Pfft. Nobody ever yet followed through on leaving the country because of an election.

KF is IMO one of the most successful current discussion sites with little filtering and high quality. But every time something dies, another is born. Maybe more than one.

Are you familiar with the "Yaniv" mentioned in the post? That would be Jessica Yaniv - a truly terrible Canadian TG who likes to organize topless under 18 pool parties with no adults allowed.

She also sues when salon owners won't shave her junk.

She is a real peach.

Youtube sent me a wonderful message this morning letting me know how great I did creating and keeping my channel active.  All my hard work paid off!  It congratulated me on my eight minutes of content.    You might think eight minutes is a HUGE amount of content for a creator such as myself, but that is for all of 2020 and we were on lockdown.

The message cracked me up it.

Anyway... according to this article Google+ never really went away and social media is being used to keep you within a singular bigtechs boundaries.

So - wait... being that you can make these private groups that send to google contacts and create a kind of social media stream...

Is there a way to abuse this to make Citadel more "social media feature rich" while leveraging Google and Android's ecosystems, servers, apps and APIs?

I mean - if I'm getting my mind around Citadel - it is really just a message store, and WebCit is just a web based email client - that is presenting the message store in a non-traditional manner.

There are inboxes, and there are users - and there are collaboration rooms and groups... but it is all basically e-mail?

Just clever e-mail.

It seems like it would be super clever to abuse Google doing all the work to add enhanced features to Citadel in a way that they would prefer we didn't. Of course, the issue with Google, is when their clever ideas don't achieve their goals, they leave the customers who adopted those clever ideas in the lurch - and also, they use their clever ideas to pry their way into your personal life.

Still... it would be nice to be able to hit a share button on my Android and have it post media, content, links, gallery images, right to a room on a Citadel.

Reddit cares so much. Until they find out you're not one of them, then you're not human and less than the shit on their shoes.
