Ironically, a critical, strategic thinker probably wouldn't truck with them.

I was forced to go on one of the wonderful* Obama care health plans when my insurer left the state.  About a week ago I started getting phone calls from an area code just to the east of our area code. I didn't know the number and they didn't leave a message.  This area code is the same area code as the call center of my current insurance company.  This week they started leaving messages.  My voice mails are transcribed then emailed to me.

Hi, my name is sally and I'm calling from Matrix Medical network on behalf of your health plan preventive care is key component to healthy living which is why we would like to speak with you about valuable new service provided at no cost to you by your health plan,

Two things, they said "My health plan" but didn't use the name of my insurance carrier.  That is the first sign of bullshit.  If they are calling on their behalf they should use their name. Second, the phrases "valuable new service" and "no cost to you" are red flags and warning lights.

(*May not actually be wonderful)

I searched again for that company, they do work with my insurance company.  Other results for the search are negative, but the insurance company does mention them in one of their pamphlets.

The idea behind LinkedIn is supposed to be that it facilitates the kind of networking you ought to be doing anyway.

Although I've noticed in the last year or two that people are starting to treat it like another Facebook. This is unprofessional and annoying.

Got another call at another company the other day, some costumer service company wanted to know wether my contact with the ISP people that happened "2-4 weeks ago" was satisfying. They had the name of the ISP correct, but in germany, it is like a monopoly, since it once was the state run phone company. I asked them which contact they refer to, since I had a handful of phone exchanges and we had a technician at that location previously. The answer was "I can't tell you for privacy reasons"....

I mean seriously? The ISP knows what it was about, I know what it was about. So either I trust the caller because he is official and knows about the issue, or I think it is some shady MITM and he is making some guesses in order to gain info. Not that it is top secret stuff, but I just replied "well, if you can't tell me for privacy reasons, then I can't tell you for privacy reasons, since I can not be sure that you are a legit caller." They understood and politely ended the call.

What annoys me is the potential for abuse. In germany, Datenschutz, protection of your data, is taken seriously and now this falls back on us, since every call center, legit or not, can simply pretend to be correctly working by appealing to "privacy reasons."

I had the guy convinced ... honestly ... that I couldn't start the
computer right now because it's powered by a generator turned by a
hamster in a wheel, and the hamster is sleeping. He's going to call
back tomorrow.

He called back today. I told him that since my computer had a virus, I got rid of it. He seemed disappointed that he didn't have the opportunity to help me fix it first.

What's with all of the "tactical flashlight" spam this year? Are they all from the same scumbags or is this a trend?

FTW!  That is a much more fun response than the one I usually use, which is that I've started the IP trace and to please hold while I validate his IP, location, and family information with my CIA friend, after which I will be pleased to have his help (at which point they either collapse in laughter or get scared but either way hang up).

On the day my condominium flooded, out of the blue, my cell phone rang from a robo-caller offering a free night at a 5-star hotel.

I thought it uncanny Mariot should have that kind of awareness.

However, that magic moment became diminished when the robo-caller did it again just now.

I can't decide if I should thank some deity that Google hasn't truly gone off the rails in being so aware and helpful that they should facilitate such recommended advertising, or if I should be pissed off at being robo-dialed on my cell phone.

Heh, yeah, that's the more likely thing, isn't it?

They *say* do no evil, but those are just words. In the end, once they've completely sucked you in, they flip the switch, and you never see anything familiar again.

"It looks like you're using an ad blocker!"

Yes I am, but showing me the article for two seconds as a "tease" before popping that message up was just enough time for me to press Ctrl-A Ctrl-C, so I can paste it into a word processor and read it there.

If your ads weren't so obnoxious I wouldn't mind having them on the page.

I love sites that let you have two seconds to read the first couple of lines of an article before they throw a pop-up in your face telling you to either pay up or disable your ad blocker.

That's just enough time to hit Ctrl-P and then read the article via Print Preview.

Thank you for this tip.  I came across a site this morning that had that popup.  It wasn't an article that I was too interested in, so I wouldn't of cared if I didn't read it but the trick worked.  What pissed me off, when I tried to leave the page (or if I tried to turn off the ad blocker) another pop-up came up and said "Don't leave, subscribe!"  I thought chrome disable pop-ups.

Those videos and share boxes that pop out and follow your scrolling drive me nuts.
