There's a lot of designs. Depends on how far you want to go. If you have access to a machine shop, you can build almost anything.

If you're looking to make a single shot type weapon from Home Depot, it's pretty easy.

3D printing with plastic is a non-starter.

So where are we at this point with 3D printing of metal? That seems like the obvious breakthrough.

Way more expensive than buying a welder, an angular grinder, a hacksaw and a bunch of standard metal pieces and building your own thing. Cheapest metal printer I have heard of is above 120k USD.

True, but one benefit of 3D printing is that you don't need to know how to fabricate parts. If you have the design for a part you just push a button and it comes into existence.

If 3D printing of metal can be made affordable -- or instead, the innovation of a thermoset polymer that cures hard and dense enough to be used in the barrel of a gun -- then it becomes possible for guns to be manufactured by non-gunsmiths. That is what makes this problem space interesting.

I've got some more time now......

There's a ton going on in 3D printing of weapons. But most focus on replicating what's already polymer in off the shelf firearms.

So, you can easily buy most of the parts over the counter, and the pieces that are consdiered a "firearm" are printed. It's how 80% firearms are sold.
You need dom do 20% of the work yourself.

The barrel is the hardest part to deal with. If you search for electro-chemical machining, you will find ways of making a rifled barrel at home too.... The FGC-9 I mentioned uses this process. You can build the entire gun at home with a handful of parts from a hardware store and a 3D printer.

For now.  Depending on how the election goes ( cant believe i'm saying that on December 27th... politics aside, this is nuts ) i suspect they will come back, even more restrictive than before. They want to ban everything, regulation is just a step towards that goal. Clearly unconstitutional, but they rarely get called out by the powers above them so they do whatever the hell they feel like.

I didnt sign the petition out of concern of them watching. Did it require a name and address? If so, i wonder if it was just a fishing expedition of names to go 'visit' next year.

Apparently as of this morning they still have not taken down the comment form, as promised.

Guess they changed their minds?

Not read it yet in detail, but i guess now they are trying to ban gun related files for 3D printing.  Um, that was shown as free speech not too long ago. its also legal to produce your own personal firearms, assuming you are not a prohibited possessor.  Double infringement.

We should put this person in charge of gun laws!

"During my 12.5 years as a Member of this body, I have never believed that additional gun control or Federal registration of guns would reduce crime. I am convinced that a criminal who wants a firearm can get one through illegal, nontraceable, unregistered sources, with or without gun control. In my opinion a national register or ban of handguns would be impossible to carry out and may not result in reductions in crime."
