Subject: How to Run a Linux Desktop Using the Windows Subsystem for Linux

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Running Linux alongside Windows has proven increasingly useful over the years. However, dual booting can be difficult to manage, and setting up a virtual machine has some stability issues. One solution is to use the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Here's how to run a Linux desktop on Windows using the Windows Subsystem for Linux.

Subject: Let's take a look at Oracle's love and hate relationship with open source software

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

All companies use open source now, but some, such as Oracle, have never been completely comfortable with it. Back in 2009, I followed Oracle's acquisition of Sun as closely as a tick on a dog's neck. I doubted very much that it would work out well. I thought Sun would have been better off with IBM. In the end, it was a mixed bag.

Subject: FreeBSD 14.1 vs. DragonFlyBSD 6.4 vs. NetBSD 10 vs. Linux Benchmarks

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

After last week looking at how FreeBSD 14.1 has improved performance over FreeBSD 14.0, here is an expanded cross-OS comparison now looking at how the new FreeBSD 14.1 stable release compares to the recently released NetBSD 10.0, the current DragonFlyBSD 6.4 release, and then CentOS Stream 9 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for some Linux comparison data points.

Subject: 12 Days Have Passed Since the Edward Brocklesby Revelations and Debian Project Has Said Absolutely Nothing About That

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

One must therefore assume they have nothing to say in their defence (covering up severe security failings). IMAGINE something very damaging being presented, with full context, based on original material, right from the horse's own mouth. One might expect, at the very least, a face-saving statement, such as "well, that was a long time ago" or "we learned our lessons"...Well, Debian does not work that way. Instead, like a cult, it only attacked the messenger.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

If you're still using Windows 10 (or, perish the thought, Windows 7), it's nearly time to upgrade. Windows 10 will stop receiving updates next year, leaving you vulnerable to online threats. But, what if your PC won't run Windows 11? One of these Linux operating systems might be the answer.
