It's because the United States was built as, well, a united group of states, not as a powerful centralized national government. The President is chosen by the states, and there's actually no requirement that a popular vote be held in each state at all.

To argue against the existence of the Electoral College is really a smaller version of arguing against the existence of states in the first place. Perhaps that's the conversation that should take place instead?
It's called the "federal" government because it's a federation of states, but if that model is failing then it could be a far more interesting discussion -- one I'd be willing to have.

Speaking as a person who lives in a country that recently voted by a very tiny majority, to secede from the European Union, I can see the value of the Electoral Colledge, (mostly because I "lost" in that vote.) butI still feel that as a system it is flawed, although I don't have any idea how it might be fixed, it may even be that it is not broken.
Devolution of The States is conceivably not even possible, they have after all been United for some consierable time, and the entire Federal Government would need to find new jobs! Having said that Continental Europe did alright for a long time as a number of nation states. (Discounting some large scale wars, of course.)
As always with Politics, I find myself with more questions than answers, and every answer I get only increases the number of questions.
