my border router linux box (amd k6-300 with 72m of memory ... bought circa 1998) has been up for 460 days, and it's only that short because I moved house 460 days ago. It's running a few revs back of debian stabile and I keep meaning to switch it to the latest release I've got running on a more modern system ( via c3 533mhz with 256m of ram, hot stuff ) but I never seem to find the time to finish it up.

hm, I've heard of dec VMS boxes to have done this very good in the past - before people started cracking - or when they did, VMS was already so much of an alien nobody could find its own installation to search for exploits...

Once I got rid of BTRFS my work linux box had no more problems with the wintendo in a box.

I guess this one is worth repasting from the feed:

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-layoffs-of-18000-employees-begin-7000031705/

So finaly all those nokians are set free. but, that android series will still be supported - sort of.

I guess 2 loosers joining doesn't make a winner can be counted as revalidated by this...

Heh... maybe this CEO is serious about reforming Microsoft.

I figured if he really wanted to reform the company, he would need massive layoffs to show that he means it. It'll be demoralizing, but it's the only way to change a broken corporate culture.

No one is happy to see real people becoming unemployed. But if the layoffs are a sign of the continued decline of Microsoft, then I'm all for it. Rot in hell, Microsoft. May the wildfires currently out of control in Washington destroy your headquarters and your source code repository. And of course Bill's house.

Realistically though, as you guys are pointing out, this is really a Nokia layoff. Let's all hope that Microsoft continues to fail at Windows Phone, and that Satya puts pragmatism ahead of "Windows Uber Alles" and focuses on developing software for Android and iOS instead of pushing a platform nobody wants.

I guess he will try to stop microsoft being a 'me too' company, as it has been ill faited in the last year with netbooks, phones and tablets.

nokia was dead already when they bought it.

Microsoft has never been anything *but* a "me too" company. The only thing that's changed over the last decade is that they stopped being successful at totally supplanting the innovators they copied.

I really liked my Nokia phone when I had AT&T, it was my first cell phone, nice "brick", it stored numbers and
dialed them. Meh to all the others. I think it was the Nokia 6110-C. (AT&T employees got it first) The lastest
software version and had this new feature called "text messaging", we had no idea why someone would want to use
that. The general public couldn't text message yet as it was in the testing stage, but we got a few text
messages sent, "Why would someone text?" before they turned the feature off.

I find it puzzling that he wants to push Microsoft into a company that's innovative.

Large companies generally fail at innovation. They can't get around their own stupid large size. When they wish to innovate, they gobble up a small company that truly was innovative, and subvert the technology to their own insipid ends.

Computers run by MS OS can run fine, if the users are not given admin rights, only use a handful of sensible programms. Secretaries for example: They only use productive software, do not procrastinate with facebook or any other unclean pages. Our driving simulator ran for 7 years with XP, without updates, antivir software, but also without internet access. Stupid users with admin access kill their systems regularly, especially when they install "My free X converter". Rather common. Or children installing games from dubious pages.

I do not think that MS now comes to reason, nobody ever wanted windows phone/mobile OS software, they were always a niche market. Buying Nokia in the first place was an error. I am really sorry for all the Nokia staff, I really liked Nokia. BTW, here is an analysis of the email used to axe all those jobs: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/07/microsoft-lays-off-thousands-with-bad-memo.html It starts with "Hello there" :D

well, at least they managed to offer a mobile platform which offered the ability to write apps with much less agony then for symbian or palm OS.

However - yes - when HTC sold its first android I knew that this was comming to an end.

At least the french had the cochones to tell us face to face they're going to fire us instead of sending us an email...

However, talkig about a win win situation...

oh, wait, it is the win win bullshit.

Except that we knew, oh, meeting with undisclosed number of hosts anounced by HR, and HR+Bosses on the way into the building - ok thats it.

Doing this with an email is realy cowardeus, but what 'd you expect from a microslut mole...

These things happen. I suppose you could virtualize the image and run it on a cluster with live migration, but really, we all know Linux has awesome uptime and Windows still needs prophylactic reboots to stay usable.

You're paying mostly for the OS. Fucking Microsoft doesn't really get it.
