Well darn, i didnt get first post :)

I could have. I was dealing with the dog and the noise from around 10 pm. Oddly it wasn't as bad as in prior years.   Actually was an acceptable level. One boom far away and some little firecracker things a few streets over. Minor.  But not minor for the dog.

Hippie GNU Ears to everyone except RMS.

I've been a bit scarce lately: life threw me some curveballs in late 2023 and things have been pretty hectic. We're currently paying a contractor 6-figures to get the house fixed up... all of which is necessary work because we've been ignoring the problem for so long.

In this case, "fixed up" means more like "everything short of a complete teardown and rebuild."

Geez...ironically fitting to your nick, though. Hope it all works out okay.

If you need a hand with anything ... I have tools, skills, and a truck, and you're not too far away.

For the time being I am just happy to hear that you are still around. Best wishes to you as well.

And yeah, fuck RMS. :)

I love Italian movies when they feature horses.

They obviously get the cheapest horses they can get, which means they are trained just enough. This leads to hillarious situations, such as when the hero parks his horse at the Saloon and goes on with heroic deeds... meanwhile, the horse, who has never been trained, tries to bite the hat of an extra, or starts playing with the doors of the Saloon by pushing them open and closed with his nose.

Best prize goes to a horse that was supposed to play dead in an epic about Roamns and Greeks. The guy just could not lay still. Everytime he thought nobody was looking at him, rose his head to look around. He was so cute HAHAHAHA.

Yeah, I'm starting to think the guy's asking for maybe a little too much money. It's an investment in our own house, so it's not like we're being swindled into some boondoggle investment, but still, the sales tactics sucked a bit.

The problem is, it can be hard to find a contractor willing and able to take a job this big, so sometimes you have to take your opportunities when they come, I guess.

Still...

that was my thought too, but not knowing the area, or the normal value of a house, it may not be all that much in the bigger picture

Around this county a 'cookie cutter' house in a new development with no yard will hit 250k now... its insane.   Even my dinky place is pushing 180.. ( at least according to latest tax bill, not put it on the market or anything )

Foundation reinforcements, roof, siding and cladding, chimney, modern windows, doors, reconstruction of closets that had water damage due to a recently fixed roof issue, renovate bathroom...

this place was a fixer-upper when I moved in 15 years ago and we avoided doing the work LOL

also, there's stuff that's either no longer to code (gas-fired water heater has got to go because we don't have space to wall it off) or was just built badly in the first place (foundation). roof has too many layers of shingle and it's too heavy, because previous owner just capped it off instead of stripping and replacing.

Sounds delightful. :) Actually it's a laundry list of things I'd spend all of my days merrily working on if I didn't have a day job. Except maybe the roof; my days of working on ladders are over.

Roofs are meant to be overlaid, though. The rule of thumb is that you can go up to three layers before you have to tear it down and start over with just the decking. That is assuming the decking is in good condition and doesn't need to be replaced. Then if the spot being replaced is part of a dormer and your friend who is helping steps on it, you also have to repair the ceiling below... hehe good times

If i could my goal would be to walk away and start over somewhere else.  At least 45 minutes south west of here. I will not spend any more than i have to here, i dont like it here now, and every day it seems, a little less.

This time of year in much of America you get lots of snow. What do we get here in Mississippi? Thunderstorms. Wind and rain are battering against my house as I type this. If I wasn't so attached to this old house and didn't have old relatives that I need to be near I would probably move to Kentucky or Idaho or something.

Bad thing about moving further north is you get tornadoes.

I have been very very lucky 2 times. Very lucky.

From 2300 to 0000 I couldn't take any rides.  Why?  They were all for FUCKING AUSTIN!  So, big storm over Houston.  Epic delays in offloading plane passengers in San Antonio.

So apparently both Houston airports closed, Austin, Waco, Dallas ... all closed.  Where did they all divert to?  San Antonio.

What was the result?  Lots of ride requests going to faraway places I don't wanna go to.

I think the code in NYC is a little more strict: 2 layers max.

We had 5. Too heavy. Needed to be redone.

Wow, never heard of anyone going up to five before. Code is what it is; three layers is just the rule-of-thumb. Although with the wind we had last night you could have just loosened some nails and all five layers would have just blown away. My home had its original roof when we moved in, so it was one layer at 23 years old, but I had the roofers strip it anyway. After so many roof problems at the old house I just didn't want to deal with "technical debt".

Yeah, we are paying the price for previous owners' and builders' dumbass decisions.

Months of work with a team of 3-4 people working.
