Subject: Google's Good Guy Reign is Over

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Google showed incredible stupidity, arrogance or both when it sniffed not just WiFi networks, but private information such as email addresses while it was at it. When you purport to do no evil, you better have a better grip on what's going on inside your business.

Subject: UDS: He did NOT say that . . . did he?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

For reasons mentioned in yesterday’s blog item, I’m not at the Ubuntu Developers Summit in Oakland. Oh, I could go up there and attend — it’s only 80 miles from the cozy confines of the Felton redwoods — but I value my life and I’d like to keep it, thank you very much. This is not to say that I don’t hear about what’s going on there from friends, as well as from members of the Ubuntu Apocalypse, who are in attendance and are blogging, tweeting and communicating in some form or another (no smoke signals yet, sadly). I do hear a lot of what’s going on, and I thank everyone for posting the updates.

Subject: Encrypt Your Data With EncFS (Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 11.10)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. It is a pass-through filesystem, not an encrypted block device, which means it is created on top of an existing filesystem. This tutorial shows how you can use EncFS on Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 11.10 to encrypt your data.
