So, this is more just a general observation. I've been posting messages, then moving on from a room, then I'll notice the post I thought I had committed did not save.

Today I noticed that in the upper left hand corner of the screen, in blue - it was flashing "Refusing to post empty message".

This happened several times - but I'm remote and can't really dig into researching any logs.

But my thought was - I often miss these little alerts because the white on blue alert up in the corner. It is easy to miss.

If it were just centered on the screen - it would be more noticeable.

Subject: SMTP authentication problem from outlook

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello all,

Could not find search function in this forum, so apologies if this is a recurring question.

Installed Citadel on my PI4, and most of it is working, except i have problems connecting outlook.

I have setup citadel as my mailserver, and i can send and receive email to external accounts (work, gmail, etc). (Test via Webcit)

I'm using outlook 2016 and connect via POP3/SMTP.

Outlook collects mail via POP3 fine from the server, using account settings either on port 110 and 995 no problem.

But is keeps asking for my credentials when using SMTP - controlpanel/mailsettings - test account setting - tries to send a test mail.

Tried SMTP via port 25 no encryption, but also using port 465 - with SSL enabled - keeps popping credentials question and port 587 STARTTLS - credentials quesions

'Your email server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password"

email server rejects login using username/password. But they work fine for POP3 logon......

Using the same credentials, sending from my Galaxy S10 via wifi on internal network using builtin mailclient using port 465 and SSL is no problem.

So Citadel & Pi should be configured correctly...

I'm lost. Any suggestions ?

Tnx

Bart

Is it possible to repair the database without doing a reinstall?

Yes, run database_cleanup.sh

Hey,

thanks for your answer.

In which path is this file located?

Best regards

Subject: Outgoing E-mails Not Received

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've set up a new Citadel server and I'm trying to troubleshoot why e-mails send from the Citadel server are not being received.

I've performed all the steps here:

https://www.citadel.org/outbound_mail.html

and everything looks good!  I can telnet to gmail's SMTP server

root@raspberrypi:/home/laban# telnet alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25

Trying 64.233.186.27...

Connected to alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.

Escape character is '^]'.

220 mx.google.com ESMTP o15si3122892qtr.382 - gsmtp

Problem is that the email is never received.  I've tested sending to other domains and have the same issue.

I also looked at

https://www.citadel.org/i_want_to_be_a_whitehead.htm

and the only issue I see is that a reverse DNS by my IP resolves to ISP not to my domainname.

69.206.142.nn

root@XXXX:/home/laban# host 69.206.142.10

10.142.206.69.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer cpe-69-206-142-nn.hvc.res.rr.com.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the issue could be or what I should check?

check your mailbox for the delivery failure notice.  the 3 digit code after the recipient address is the foreign mail server rejection id.  your recipient likely subscribes to spamhaus.  If you are sending from a server at a residential address, your service provider likely logged your ip as part of the residential block of addresses to spamhaus.  You're likely on the policy block list.  search your ip to verify.  spamhaus is part of the internet cartel to prevent private upstarts from sourcing email.  PBL list is different from SBL.

You were 100% correct.  My ip is listed on the PBL. So what do I do?  relay my mail through some SMTP Smarthost?

yep, some sort of relay.  rotten internet cartels.

or it'd be nice if they incorporated ip spoofing into citadel!  must be legal, spammers do it every day!

i stumbled on a bug in the calendar.  create a calendar event.  Then go back to it and add an attendee.  when you click the "check attendee availability" it randomizes the start and stop date and hour settings.

it'll also randomize the date and time in the same manner when you first create the calendar event.  the issue is reproducible in this forum as well.

something is hinky with the check attendee availability button anyway, when you start in the attendee tab and click the button, it jumps away from the tab which is not intuitive behavior.

There's very little that Citadel can do about the IP address of your machine being on a PBL. It's actually quite unusual for a residential ISP to permit outbound traffic on port 25 at all.

I'll take another opportunity to mention a service that Citadel operators find useful for running your own hosting operations at home:

Ace Innovative Networks offers this service for $15 a month, they send you a router and give you a /29 block of IPv4 addresses (plus one or more /64 IPv6 blocks if you like) and 5 Mbps of VPN bandwidth back to their data center.
This lets you run servers with static IP addresses, no port blocking in either direction, you are on a commercial network so no PBL, and they'll set the reverse DNS to whatever you ask.

I highly recommend this service. Tell them that Art from citadel.org sent you.

I wanted to get things straight with the text mode. The main menu says to type .Help SUMMARY, but that help file doesn't exist. I couldn't find the help file in the messages subdirectory or anywhere else. I thought I'd at least remove that part from the main menu, but I couldn't find that either. I wonder if the Easy Install didn't install all of the required files for the text client, given that I had to manually copy over the messages subdirectory myself after installation.
I would like to get everything right before putting my BBS online. Thanks.

The help menu is missing - and has been for some time. the dot help commands don't work.

I'm not sure if it works like a traditional Citadel - where you can just create the .help textfiles in the right place and they'll be read by the program - or if it is something installed internally in the code.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem since I updated to build 931 via easyinstall.

Everything works fine except the mail client connection to the SMTP.

I would also be very grateful for targeted tips on troubleshooting.

Go to

Administration - Site Configuration - Tuning: Maximum message length ____

The size is in bytes, just take note that you should increase the maximum size you expect by 20%, as the file size increases when encoding to text.

It sounds like you are looking to use that server as a mail relay.  Take a look at this page:

Subject: Re: Outgoing E-mails Not Received

So I've signed up with Mailjet with appears to offer free SMTP relays for low volume (<200 per day) users.  I've entered the following as a smart host:

smtps://5859892b0d8c3d412e6e5cea:ccb2d9f42492c08d443fd5c2e@in-v3.mailjet.com:25

While I'm seeing e-mails go out out of the send queue they are not being received.  I've created the SPF and DKIM records as directed by mailjet (which they automatically retrieve and verify) but still my mails are not being received.

spf =

v=spf1 include:spf.mailjet.com ?all

Do I need to do any spf configuration on the Citadel server?  Are there any logs I can look at to see what's happening?  Or does anyone have any other thoughts?

Thank you all for your help!

Laban
