I suppose maybe they never drop before something else less painful ends me - and I get to go out without knowing THAT particular suffering.

As far as i have heard, they never dissolve, only grow.  Or sometimes breakup into smaller, even sharper pieces.  I have not experienced one, but i have friends who have had to spend time in the hospital.

That claim is mostly wrong. Kidney stones can dissolve depending on their type, and they don’t just grow endlessly. Some stones break apart, but not into “sharper pieces” as a rule. The real issue is that when a stone moves through the ureter, even small fragments can cause intense pain.

Shit - in any case, this reminded me that I may have huge and terrible suffering ahead in my life, in addition to whatever OTHER misery the future might have planned for me.
